Apple's latest iPad update brings AI-powered playlist creation to Apple Music alongside eight new emoji characters and enhanced video podcast support. iPadOS 26.4 arrived on March 24, marking the fourth major revision since the operating system launched last September. The Playlist Playground feature uses artificial intelligence to generate music collections based on text prompts entered by users. This is Apple's continued push into AI-assisted content creation following similar tools introduced across its ecosystem earlier this year.

Apple Music received the most substantial changes in today's update according to multiple sources tracking the release. Beyond AI playlist generation, the service now displays concert information for artists in users' local areas and offers two new Ambient Music widgets for the Home Screen.

These widgets provide quick access to ambient soundscapes categorized as Chill, Productivity, Sleep, or Focus modes.

Eight new emoji characters join the iPad's keyboard with this release, including an orca whale, ballet dancer, distorted face, fight cloud, hairy creature, landslide, and additional designs approved through Unicode 17 standards last year. The update also introduces enhanced support for video podcasts within Apple's Podcasts app, allowing smooth switching between audio and video playback.

System-level improvements address common iPad productivity frustrations. A hidden windows reminder alerts users when they have multiple windows open for a single application but some remain minimized or obscured.

Tapping this notification reveals all open windows for that app simultaneously.

Purchase Sharing functionality within family groups gains flexibility in version 26.4 according to documentation reviewed by MacRumors. Family members can now use different payment methods rather than relying solely on the organizer's account for shared purchases.

Offline music recognition arrives in Control Center for identifying songs without an internet connection. When enabled through settings, this feature automatically delivers results once connectivity resumes rather than requiring manual identification attempts later.

The update follows six weeks of testing through developer beta channels and arrives approximately six weeks after iPadOS 26.3 reached users in February according to release timelines tracked by Ars Technica. Installation requires navigating to Settings > General > Software Update on compatible iPad models running previous versions of iPadOS 26.
