When you plug in your MSI Stealth 16 and the battery percentage just won't budge, it's a frustrating roadblock. The issue could be with the power adapter, the port, a software setting, or the battery itself. Let's walk through the steps to get you charging again.
Check the Power Adapter and Connection
Start with the basics. Make sure the power brick is firmly plugged into the wall outlet and that the LED light on it is illuminated. Inspect the cable, especially near the connectors, for any kinks, fraying, or damage.
For the Stealth 16, ensure you're using the official MSI charger that came with it. Using a lower-wattage USB-C charger might power the laptop but won't charge the battery under load. The connection to the laptop's DC-in port needs to be solid and secure.
Perform a Full Restart
Shut down your laptop completely, don't just put it to sleep. Once it's fully off, plug in the charger, wait a moment, and then power it back on. This simple step resets the Embedded Controller, which manages power and charging, and can often resolve a temporary glitch.
If a standard restart doesn't help, try a force reset. Unplug the charger, hold down the power button for a full 60 seconds, then release it. Plug the charger back in and press the power button to turn it on. This drains any residual power from the system.
Inspect and Clean the Charging Port
Take a close look at the laptop's charging port. Use a bright light to check for any packed-in lint, dust, or debris that could be preventing the power connector from seating properly.
You can gently clean the port with a wooden toothpick or a blast of compressed air. Be very careful not to damage or bend the central pin inside the DC jack. A poor physical connection is a common culprit for intermittent charging.
Check Battery Health in Windows
Windows has a built-in tool to check your battery's condition. Press the Windows key, type Command Prompt, and run it as an administrator. In the window, type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter.
This command generates an HTML file on your drive. Open it to see your battery's design capacity versus its current full charge capacity. If the current capacity is significantly degraded (say, below 50% of the original), the battery itself may be failing and need replacement.
Update or Reinstall Battery Drivers
Outdated or corrupted drivers can confuse Windows about the power state. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager. Expand the Batteries section.
Right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Uninstall device. Do the same for the AC Adapter entry if present. Restart your laptop, and Windows will automatically reinstall fresh drivers upon bootup.
Review Settings in MSI Center
Open the MSI Center application. This is your hub for power management on this laptop. Navigate to the User Scenario section and check which profile is active.
Profiles like Super Battery are designed to maximize battery life and may limit performance and charging behavior. Switch to Balanced or Extreme Performance and see if charging resumes. Also, look for any battery care features that might limit the maximum charge level to 80%.
Verify Windows Power & Battery Settings
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery. Scroll down and click on Battery saver. Make sure the toggle for "Turn battery saver on automatically" isn't set to a very high percentage, which could affect charging behavior.
Also, click on Battery usage to see if any app is consuming an unusually high amount of power, which could theoretically offset charging if your adapter wattage is borderline.
Update Your System BIOS and Drivers
MSI frequently releases BIOS updates that fix power management and charging issues. Visit the official MSI support page for your specific Stealth 16 model. Download the latest BIOS and follow their instructions to the letter for a safe update.
While you're there, also update the chipset drivers and any system drivers related to power or management. You can use the MSI Center's Live Update feature to scan for and install these driver updates automatically.
Test With a Different Charger
If you have access to another compatible MSI charger, try it. Power adapters can fail internally over time. A faulty adapter might provide enough power to run the laptop but not enough to actually charge the battery, especially under load.
Make sure any replacement charger meets or exceeds the original's wattage specification for the Stealth 16. Using an underpowered charger is a common reason for slow or non-existent charging.
