A black screen on your iPhone 15 can be a real scare, but it's often a temporary glitch rather than a permanent failure. The phone might be on and running with a frozen or unresponsive display, or a deep software crash could be the culprit. Let's walk through the steps to get your screen back.

Force Restart Your iPhone 15

This is almost always the first thing I'd try. The process is specific to your model. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button, then quickly press and release the Volume Down button. Immediately after, press and hold the Side button.

Keep holding it even if the screen stays black for 15 to 20 seconds. You'll feel a vibration and see the Apple logo when the restart initiates. This command works at a system level, even if the display is completely dead to the touch.

Charge It with the Right Cable

Your iPhone 15 was the first model to switch from Lightning to USB-C. Make absolutely sure you're using a USB-C cable and a compatible power adapter. A completely drained battery will show nothing on the screen.

Plug it in and leave it alone for at least 30 minutes. If you see no charging indicator after that time, try a different USB-C cable and a different wall adapter. Also, check your case; some thicker or metal cases can interfere with proper connection, especially if the phone is overheating.

Check Your Battery Settings

There's a feature in iOS that can confuse users into thinking their phone isn't charging. Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and look for "Charging Optimization."

If "80% Limit" is enabled, your iPhone 15 will intentionally stop charging at about 80% to preserve long-term battery health. The screen will work fine, but if you glanced at it while plugged in and saw it wasn't reaching 100%, you might have thought it was broken. You can toggle this off if you prefer a full charge.

Look for Signs of Life

Even with a black screen, your phone might still be on. Try calling it from another phone to see if it rings. Ask "Hey Siri" to set a timer or turn on the flashlight. If you feel a vibration for notifications or hear sounds, the device is functioning but the display hardware has likely failed.

Inspect the screen closely for any hairline cracks, discolored spots, or visible impact damage. A damaged display usually requires a repair from Apple or an authorized service provider.

Connect to a Computer

If a force restart did nothing, grab your computer. Connect your iPhone 15 using a known-good USB-C cable. On a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, open Finder. On a Windows PC or older Mac, open iTunes.

If the computer recognizes your phone, you'll see it listed. Click Update first. This reinstalls iOS without erasing your data. If the update fails or isn't an option, you may need to click Restore, which will wipe the phone completely.

Put Your iPhone 15 in Recovery Mode

When the computer doesn't see the phone at all, recovery mode is the next step. Connect the USB-C cable to your computer first. Then, quickly press and release the Volume Up button, press and release the Volume Down button, and immediately press and hold the Side button.

Don't let go when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen, which shows a USB-C cable pointing to a computer icon. Your Finder or iTunes window will then prompt you to Update or Restore.

Check for Display Obstructions

It sounds simple, but sometimes the screen brightness gets turned all the way down, especially if Auto-Brightness is acting up. If you can activate Siri, ask her to "turn brightness to maximum."

Also, ensure nothing is blocking the front TrueDepth camera array at the top of the screen. A poorly aligned screen protector or a case with a thick lip can sometimes trick the proximity sensor, keeping the screen dark.

Consider Environmental Damage

The iPhone 15 is water-resistant, but it's not invincible. If it was recently exposed to significant moisture or submerged, liquid could have reached the internal display connectors. If the phone is on, power it down completely and let it dry in a well-ventilated area for at least 48 hours.

Avoid using a hair dryer or putting it in rice, as both can cause further damage. If the screen remains black after a thorough drying period, the liquid damage likely requires professional attention.
