Screen recording on your Samsung Galaxy S23 is a built-in feature that lets you capture anything happening on your display. It's perfect for making how-to guides, saving a funny moment from a video, or sharing a gameplay clip with friends.
Start a Recording from Quick Settings
Swipe down from the top of your screen twice to pull down the full Quick Settings panel. Look for the Screen recorder tile, which looks like a circle with a dot inside. If you don't see it, swipe left on the panel and tap the + or Edit button to add it from the list of available tiles.
Tap the Screen recorder tile once. A menu will pop up from the bottom of your screen, asking you to choose your audio source before you begin.
Pick Your Audio Source
Before the countdown starts, you need to decide what sound to capture. You have three main choices here. Selecting No sound will record a silent video of just your screen.
Choose Media sounds to capture audio playing from your phone, like music, game sounds, or a video's audio. The Media sounds and mic option records both that internal audio and your voice through the microphone, which is ideal for commentary.
You can also toggle your selfie camera on or off from this menu. Once your settings are ready, tap Start recording. You'll get a three-second countdown.
Use the Floating Toolbar During Recording
As soon as the recording starts, a small, semi-transparent toolbar will appear on your screen. It has buttons to pause or stop the recording, and it shows a live timer. You can drag this toolbar anywhere on the screen to keep it out of your way.
Tap the pencil icon on this toolbar to draw on your screen in real-time. I find this incredibly useful for circling a button or highlighting text in a tutorial. You can pick from several pen colors and thicknesses.
Stop and Save Your Video
To finish, tap the square stop button on the floating toolbar. Alternatively, you can swipe down to see your notifications and tap the "Touch to stop" notification there. Your video saves automatically to your Gallery app.
You'll find it in the Albums tab under "Screen recordings." The video is saved in MP4 format, which is compatible with almost any device or social media platform.
Trim and Edit Your Recording
Open the Gallery app and navigate to your screen recording. Tap on the video to play it, then tap the Edit button (it looks like a pencil). This opens Samsung's built-in video editor.
From here, you can trim the clip's length, adjust the playback speed, or add background music. When you're done editing, tap Save as copy to keep your original file intact.
Configure the Recorder for Better Videos
For more control, dive into the settings. Go to Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder. Here, you can change the video quality; I usually keep mine on 1080p for a good balance of quality and file size.
You can also enable Show touches, which paints a small circle where you tap the screen. This is a game-changer for creating clear instructional videos. You can even set a default timer for the countdown.
Understand the Recording Limitations
Due to copyright protection, most premium video streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max will block screen recording. You'll typically just get a black screen with audio. Banking and secure payment apps also restrict recording for your safety.
For everything else, your own photos, web browsing, games, and most other apps, the screen recorder will work perfectly on your Galaxy S23.
