Pressing Shift+Tab in a game and getting nothing? Start with a fresh launch, then check the two settings that control the Steam Overlay. If it still won’t open, work through the shortcut checks, software conflicts, and repair options below.
Give Steam and your game a fresh start
Close the game.
Restart Steam.
Restart your computer before testing again.
Launch the game from its entry in Steam’s Library instead of opening its executable directly.
Allow a few seconds for the overlay to initialize before pressing Shift+Tab.
If nothing opens, check both the main overlay switch and the separate setting for your game below.
Enable both overlay settings
Open Steam > Settings > In Game. Turn on Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
In Library, right-click the affected game and choose Properties... > General. Turn on Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game there too.
Launch the game again to test the overlay. The per-game setting is separate from the main switch, so don’t skip that second toggle.
Check the shortcut you’re pressing
Press Shift+Tab while the game is running.
Open Steam > Settings > In Game to check the assigned overlay shortcut.
Change the binding to your preferred key combination if needed.
Test the assigned shortcut during gameplay.
Tip: With the Steam Controller released in 2015, compare its Steam button with Shift+Tab in a compatible game launched through Steam to distinguish a controller input problem from a general overlay failure.
Rule out background software conflicts
Monitoring, recording, optimization, and other background programs are sources of interference with Steam.
Exit one suspected program at a time to isolate the conflict.
Restart Steam after closing that program.
Launch the game to test the overlay again.
Restart the computer if the program’s background components remain active after you close it.
If the overlay freezes or disappears under load, close unnecessary applications to reduce resource pressure.
Compare your computer with the game’s system requirements if the problem continues under load.
Consider hardware or operating-system upgrades if your computer falls short of those requirements.
If the background tests don’t resolve the problem, check your antivirus for blocks affecting Steam or the game using the security vendor’s controls. The controls differ between products, and Valve recommends specialist assistance for antivirus conflicts.
Configure an appropriate exception only after confirming antivirus interference.
Focus on the game that fails
If the overlay works in other games, check the affected title’s installed files and compatibility before repairing the whole Steam installation.
Restart your computer.
Open Steam.
In Library, right-click the game and choose Properties....
Open Installed Files. Valve’s overlay help also lists this route as Local Files > Installed Files, so if your client shows a Local Files tab, open it first.
Select Verify integrity of game files.
Let verification finish before launching the game again.
Consult the game developer’s support information if the overlay still fails. Software-rasterized games cannot display the Steam Overlay, and browser-hosted games require developer integration. Neither limitation has a consumer toggle that fixes it.
Restore the overlay’s online features
Interference from VPNs, traffic filters, and other network software disrupts the connections Steam’s online functions need.
Use these checks when the overlay opens but its web content or online features fail.
Temporarily exit a suspected VPN, traffic filter, download accelerator, or bandwidth-heavy application.
Restart Steam.
Retest the affected online feature.
On Windows, adjust the firewall only after confirming that it blocks Steam. Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall.
Select Change settings, obtaining administrator approval if prompted.
Select Steam in the app list, or use Allow another app to locate its executable.
Apply the exception only where needed.
On a work or school device, ask the administrator to review Steam’s access if organization policy blocks changes or restricts Steam traffic. Consumer settings cannot override that policy.
Remove Windows compatibility overrides
If Steam has Windows compatibility overrides, remove them using Valve’s procedure.
- 1.Locate Steam.exe and steamwebhelper.exe within your Steam installation.
- 2.Right-click Steam.exe and open Properties > Compatibility.
- 3.Clear enabled compatibility options, then select Apply.
- 4.Open Change settings for all users, clear the overrides there, and confirm with OK.
- 5.Repeat the same compatibility changes for steamwebhelper.exe.
- 6.Relaunch Steam and test the overlay again.
Repair Steam without uninstalling your games
If the earlier checks haven’t restored the overlay, reinstall Steam over its existing installation. Valve says this preserves installed games. Uninstalling Steam first deletes game content, so leave the existing installation in place.
Open Steam’s official download page.
Choose Install Steam for your platform.
Run the installer, targeting your existing Steam installation folder.
Launch a game through Steam once the repair finishes.
Press Shift+Tab to test the overlay.
If repair doesn’t help, consult the affected game or application developer’s support information about overlay compatibility. For applications categorized as Software, the developer controls Steamworks overlay enablement; ordinary consumer accounts cannot change that setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Shift+Tab work but the FPS counter is missing?
The performance display has a separate setting. Open Steam > Settings > In Game > Performance Monitor and choose a display detail level. Available metrics depend on your operating system and hardware.
Can I use the Steam Overlay with a game bought elsewhere?
Yes, with compatible games. Open Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library in Steam. Select or browse for the installed game, then choose Add Selected Programs. Launch the resulting Library shortcut. Compatibility depends on the game, especially when another launcher intervenes.
Should I join the Steam beta to fix the overlay?
Use a beta only when it contains a documented fix for your specific problem. On desktop, open Steam > Settings (Preferences on Mac) > Interface > Client Beta Participation. Select Steam Beta Update, then choose Restart Now. Joining a beta does not guarantee a repair.
Should I factory-reset my Steam Deck for an overlay problem?
A factory reset clears local data, including games, and is disproportionate for an isolated overlay problem. For unresolved SteamOS software issues, open the SteamOS support page and consult Software Issues FAQ. If the problem remains, select Contact Steam Support. Describe the affected games and the troubleshooting you’ve tried.
