Your Vizio TV turns on and off by itself, interrupting a movie or waking up an empty room. Start with the power connection, then check connected devices and scheduled automations. These checks help narrow down the cause before you erase settings or arrange a repair.

Start with the power connection

Start here if the TV shuts down before you can open its settings. These checks help separate a power-supply problem from a device sending power commands.

Secure the power cord at the wall outlet.

If the cord detaches from the TV, secure that end too.

Test the outlet with another device to confirm that it supplies power.

Try turning on the TV with its physical Power/Standby button.

For a setup with a connected Roku player, unplug both the TV and Roku from power.

Leave them unplugged for 10 seconds.

Reconnect both directly to power outlets, bypassing power strips and extension cords for this test.

Turn the TV and Roku on. This tests the connected setup; it does not repair an internal TV fault.

Check whether the screen is dark or the TV is off

A missing video signal makes a running TV look switched off.

Press MENU on the remote. If the interface appears, the TV is still running.

Use INPUT to select another source and test whether the problem follows one input.

Check the connections to the source device that lost its picture. Vizio documents these checks for the VHD24M, VHD32M, VFD32M, VFD40M, and VFD43M families.

For an alternative on a compatible smart TV, select your TV in the paired VIZIO Mobile app’s device selector, which Vizio’s HD/Full-HD manual calls the Device list. The TV must remain responsive enough for app control.

Use Input in the app to select another source.

Restart the TV and check for updates

If your TV stays on long enough and displays these options, use the remote’s Menu button to open All Settings → Admin & Privacy → Restart TV → Yes.

On models that display Soft Power Cycle instead, select that option. If neither option appears, continue with the applicable checks below.

After the restart, connect the TV to the internet for the software check.

Open All Settings → Admin & Privacy → Check for Updates → Yes and let any available download finish. Vizio also delivers software automatically in the background. An update does not guarantee a fix for power cycling.

Stop connected devices from controlling TV power

Check HDMI control when the TV wakes or changes behavior as you use a streaming player or game console. The settings below belong to those connected devices.

On Roku, press Home to open Settings → System → Control other devices.

Uncheck 1-touch play to stop its unwanted TV wake-up or input-switching commands.

Unplug the Roku from power.

After 10 seconds, reconnect it directly to a power outlet.

If the Roku connects through an audio/video receiver, connect it directly to a TV HDMI input for a separate test.

Use the TV’s INPUT button to select that input and check the behavior again.

On Fire TV, open Settings → Display & Sounds → HDMI-CEC Device Control.

Turn HDMI-CEC Device Control off for testing. Amazon documents toggling this control for HDMI troubleshooting; using the off setting here tests whether HDMI power commands are involved. It is not an established cure for Vizio reboot loops.

On PS5, open Settings → System → HDMI.

Turn off Enable HDMI Device Link.

On PS4, open Settings → System.

Uncheck Enable HDMI Device Link.

On Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED in TV mode, open HOME Menu → System Settings → TV Settings → Match TV Power State. Some regional interfaces call the submenu TV Output.

Turn off Match TV Power State.

For a docked Nintendo Switch 2, open HOME Menu → System Settings → Display → Match TV Power State.

Turn off Match TV Power State.

Test the TV again after changing the setting on your connected device.

Remove scheduled smart-home power commands

A configured smart-home automation controls scheduled power changes to your TV, streaming device, or smart plug.

In Google Home’s new automation editor, open Automations.

Select the automation that controls your TV or its connected equipment.

Set it to Inactive.

For Alexa, open the app’s More → Routines menu.

Select the routine that controls the TV, streaming device, or smart plug.

Open its three-dot menu.

Choose Delete Routine.

In Apple’s Home app on iPhone, iPad, or Mac, open Automation.

Select the automation controlling your compatible TV or associated accessory.

Turn off Enable This Automation.

Give the TV room to ventilate

If shutdowns coincide with heat, check the TV’s placement. Vizio’s Quantum Pro safety instructions require clear ventilation openings and placement away from heat-producing equipment.

Uncover the ventilation openings on the rear and bottom of the TV.

Move the TV out of enclosed cabinetry that lacks ventilation.

Keep the TV at least three feet from heat sources such as radiators, heaters, ovens, and amplifiers. Leave the TV’s cabinet closed.

If the TV continues cycling, try the factory reset below only on a listed model. For other models, contact Vizio for model-specific help.

Use a model-specific reset or arrange service

A factory reset erases configuration, so save it until after the reversible checks. Vizio documents a 12-second physical-button reset for VHD24M, VHD32M, VFD32M, VFD40M, and VFD43M TVs, plus Quantum Pro VQP65C-84 and VQP75C-84 models.

With one of those TVs on, hold the physical Power/Input button beneath the remote sensor for 12 seconds to restore defaults. On the listed HD/Full-HD models, this also removes stored credentials. Do not use that duration on an unlisted model.

If cycling persists, or the TV cannot stay on long enough to troubleshoot, contact Vizio through Contact Us or Visit VIZIO Support on its official product page, providing the cycling behavior, model, and serial number.

Ask about professional diagnosis and service or warranty options. Persistent internal power faults require qualified service personnel. Keep the cabinet closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download firmware from the VIZIO OS product page?

No. The VIZIO OS product page explains the platform; it does not provide a downloadable firmware binary. TV software is supplied through the TV’s update mechanism.

How do I stop a scripted Google Home automation?

Sign in at home.google.com/automations and select the script controlling your TV, connected device, or power supply. Turn Activate off. These controls apply to Google Home’s Public Preview script editor.

How do I exit demo mode on a Vizio HD or Full-HD TV?

On VHD24M, VHD32M, VFD32M, VFD40M, and VFD43M models, press BACK, select Exit Demo, and press OK. This exits retail demonstration behavior; it is not a general fix for reboot loops.

Does holding the Quantum Pro power button for three seconds reset it?

No. On Quantum Pro VQP65C-84 and VQP75C-84 models, holding Power/Input for three seconds and releasing it turns the TV off. A factory reset uses a 12-second hold while the TV is on.
