Factory resetting your ASUS ROG Phone 9 is the most complete way to wipe it clean, whether you're passing it on to someone else or trying to fix a stubborn software glitch that just won't quit. It's a powerful tool, but it deletes everything, so you'll want to be prepared before you start.
Back Up Your Data First
Before you do anything else, make sure your important stuff is safe. Head into Settings > System > Backup and confirm your Google account backup is active. I'd tap Back up now for a fresh, immediate backup to Google Drive.
Don't forget about your photos and videos. Open Google Photos and check that sync is on and complete. Once you confirm the reset, everything on the phone's internal storage is gone for good.
Sign Out of Your Accounts
To avoid getting tripped up by Factory Reset Protection (FRP) after the wipe, you need to remove your main Google account. Go to Settings > Passwords & accounts, select your Google account, and choose Remove account.
This step is crucial. If you skip it, you'll be asked for the credentials of the last Google account on the phone after the reset, which can lock you out if you don't remember the password.
Factory Reset from Your Settings Menu
If your phone is working and you can get into the system, this is the easiest method. Navigate to Settings > System > Reset options. Here, you'll see the Erase all data (factory reset) choice.
Tap it, and the phone will show you a final summary of what will be deleted. When you're ready, tap Erase all data at the bottom. You'll need to enter your PIN, pattern, or password to confirm. The phone will then restart and begin the wiping process, which takes a few minutes.
Factory Reset Using the Buttons (Recovery Mode)
Use this method if your ROG Phone 9 is frozen, stuck in a boot loop, or won't start normally. First, make sure the phone is completely powered off. Once it's off, press and hold the Power button and the Volume Down button together.
Keep holding them until you see the ASUS/ROG bootloader screen. Use the Volume Down button to highlight the Recovery Mode option, then press the Power button to select it. You'll see the Android robot with an exclamation mark.
Now, press and hold the Power button, and while holding it, tap the Volume Up button once, then release the Power button. This will bring up the recovery menu. Use the volume buttons to navigate to Wipe data/factory reset and select it with the power button. Confirm your choice on the next screen. When it's done, select Reboot system now.
Try a Less Drastic Reset First
If you're dealing with network problems or app misbehavior, a full factory reset might be overkill. Go back to Settings > System > Reset options. Here you have other choices.
You can select Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth to clear all your network connections, which often fixes connectivity issues. Reset app preferences will revert all your app permissions and default app assignments without touching your personal data.
Setting Up Your Phone After the Reset
Once the reset is complete, you'll be greeted by the standard Android setup wizard. Follow the steps to select your language and connect to Wi-Fi. When you get to the step about copying apps & data, sign in with the Google account you backed up from.
You'll be given the option to restore from a backup. Choose the most recent backup of your ROG Phone 9 to reinstall your apps and bring back your settings. Be patient, as downloading all your apps can take a while depending on your connection.
When a Factory Reset Makes Sense
I've found a factory reset is the most reliable fix for persistent system-wide lag, constant app crashes that survive updates, or mysterious battery drain you can't pin down. It's also an absolute must before you sell or give away the phone to protect your privacy.
For issues that might be related to the Snapdragon 8 Elite's heat management during long gaming sessions, try using the built-in tools first. Enable Bypass Charging in your game settings to reduce heat when plugged in, and consider turning off the AniMe Vision matrix display on the back if you're not using it, as it does use extra power.
