Finding the DNS setting on your PS5 means digging into your connection’s menus. You can change it directly for Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then test the connection and switch back if it fails. Grab your provider’s DNS addresses before you start.

Manual DNS is built into the console’s network settings, so there is nothing to install or download before making the change.

Change DNS on your connected PS5

Start with the connection your console already uses. These steps work on PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition, including original and slim models, and PS5 Pro.

Open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. Highlight your connected Wi-Fi or wired network, then press the controller’s Options button to open that connection’s settings menu.

The button opens the menu for the selected connection. The DNS controls are inside its advanced settings. Select Advanced Settings, then change DNS Settings to Manual.

Enter your provider’s addresses in Primary DNS and Secondary DNS. Select OK to save. If the connection fails after the change, try restoring Automatic DNS using the steps below.

Test the connection after saving

Run the built-in connection test once you’ve saved your DNS settings. Open Settings > Network.

Select Connection Status, then choose Test Internet Connection. A successful test confirms your console can connect with the new settings.

When router DNS changes do not reach your PS5

A manual DNS override on your PS5 takes DNS selection out of the router’s hands. Changing DNS through a router’s browser interface or companion app changes the network’s configuration. Your console’s saved manual DNS addresses remain in place until you change its connection settings.

To restore automatic DNS, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. Highlight your connection, then press the controller’s Options button.

Choose Advanced Settings. Set DNS Settings to Automatic, then select OK to save.

Your PS5 now follows the network’s DNS configuration. This also removes a previously configured Smart DNS override, so the same steps undo a manual DNS change.

If your console still uses addresses from Surfshark SmartDNS, use this restoration method to remove them. Surfshark discontinued SmartDNS on February 2, 2026.

Set DNS while adding a new connection

Setting up a new Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection? Enter the DNS addresses during setup to save yourself a return trip through the menus.

Open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. For Wi-Fi, select your network. If the Wi-Fi network is missing, choose Set Up Manually.

For Ethernet, select Set Up Wired LAN. Open Advanced Settings during connection setup, then switch DNS Settings to Manual. Enter your provider’s addresses in Primary DNS and Secondary DNS.

Older tutorials showing Use Wi-Fi or Use a LAN Cable followed by Custom describe the PS4 interface. The PS5 control is Advanced Settings.

Use Google Home for Google Wifi or Nest Wifi

Connect your PS5 to your Google Wifi or Nest Wifi network. Set the console’s DNS Settings to Automatic using the restoration steps above. In Google Home, open Home > Wifi > Network settings > Advanced Networking > DNS.

Select Custom, then enter the primary and secondary server addresses. Select Save. Keep in mind that this changes DNS for devices using the router’s DNS proxy; it does not rewrite your PS5’s stored DNS addresses.

Google Home also offers ISP’s DNS and Automatic as alternatives to Custom. These are router DNS choices, while the console’s Automatic setting lets it follow the network configuration.
