The whistle is about to blow, you open Fubo, and all you get is a spinning wheel. Maybe the app freezes the moment a match on FOX goes live, the picture goes black while the commentary keeps playing, or a "We're unable to play this content" message lands right at kickoff. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup running from June 11 to July 19 and all 104 matches streaming on Fubo, a broken stream has rarely felt this painful.

Most Fubo failures trace back to a short list of causes, and Fubo's own support playbook covers nearly all of them. Live sports puts heavy load on every streaming service, so big-match traffic spikes can cause buffering that is not your fault. Work through these fixes in order; the fastest come first.

1. Make Sure Fubo Itself Is Not Down

Before you reboot anything, check whether the problem is on Fubo's side. The official status page in the help center at support.fubo.tv/hc/en-us shows the current health of Account Creation & Management, Streaming, and Customer Support, plus any incidents from the past 30 days.

If Streaming is flagged, nothing in your living room will fix it; skip to the backup options near the end of this guide and check back in a few minutes.

2. Flip the Channel and Relaunch the App

One of Fubo's simplest official fixes works surprisingly often. Switch to a different channel, then switch back; this restarts the stream and often clears a frozen picture. If that fails, force-close the Fubo app completely and reopen it.

3. Switch Off Any VPN or Proxy

Fubo cannot be accessed using a VPN. If a VPN or proxy is changing or hiding your location, you will see an error message, or the app will not load completely. Disable it, then relaunch Fubo.

4. Power Cycle Your Device, Router, and Modem

A full power cycle clears more than a quick restart. Unplug your streaming device, smart TV, or computer from power for a minute or so, then plug it back in and let it boot completely.

Do the same for your Wi-Fi router and cable modem: unplug them, wait a minute, plug them back in, wait for the connection to return, then launch Fubo.

5. Test Your Speed Against Fubo's Real Requirements

Fubo publishes exact speed requirements: 3 Mb/s or faster for 480p, 7 Mb/s for 720p, 10 Mb/s for 1080p, and 25 Mb/s for 4K streams like the World Cup feeds. Run a test at fast.com, the tool Fubo itself points to.

Every simultaneous stream needs its own slice of bandwidth; three 720p streams need 21 Mb/s or more between them. If you are on Wi-Fi, switch to wired ethernet where possible, and if you are on cellular data, move to Wi-Fi.

6. Drop the Video Quality to Stop the Buffering

When your connection cannot keep up, a lower resolution beats a spinning wheel. On TV devices, press Up on your remote to open the Player Controls, then choose a lower option under Video Quality. If buffering continues, step down again until it stops.

On the web player, hover over the Settings cog at the bottom right of the live video and pick a lower Video Quality. iPhone and iPad have no manual control; quality adjusts automatically based on your connection speed. Some other devices also lack the in-app option; on those, adjust playback quality in the device's own settings, keeping in mind the change applies to every streaming app on that device.

7. Sign Out of Fubo and Sign Back In

A stale session can break playback and sign-in alike. Open the Fubo menu, select your account or profile, choose Sign Out, then sign back in with your credentials.

If you cannot sign in at all, confirm the app is on its latest version, make sure the device meets the minimum requirements, or reset your password.

8. Clear the Fubo App Cache

Corrupted cached data causes crashes, login loops, and playback errors; the right path depends on your hardware. On Fire TV, go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Fubo > Clear Cache. On Android TV or Google TV, go to Settings > Apps > See All Apps > Fubo > Clear Cache. On an Android phone, find Fubo under Apps in Settings and clear the cache from its storage options.

Roku clears its cache automatically whenever it restarts, so use Settings > System > Power > System Restart. There is also a manual method: with Home highlighted on the home screen, press Home five times, Up once, Rewind twice, and Fast Forward twice, then wait 15 to 30 seconds for the automatic restart.

If your device offers no cache-clearing option, uninstalling and reinstalling the app flushes the same stored data.

9. Reinstall the App and Confirm Your Device Still Qualifies

If clearing the cache was not enough, uninstall Fubo, reinstall it from your device's app store, and sign back in.

Also check whether your hardware is still supported. Fire TV and Android devices that cannot update to Android OS 7.0 (Nougat) lost support, and since February 5, 2026 they show an error at launch because Fubo pushed an update they cannot run.

Current requirements include Apple TV 4th generation or newer on tvOS 13.0 or later, Roku models 3700X and higher on OS 14 for full support, Samsung TVs from 2017, LG TVs from 2018 with webOS 4.0 or later, Vizio SmartCast TVs from 2016, Hisense VIDAA TVs from 2020, iPhone 8s or newer on iOS 16.5 or later, iPads on iPadOS 16.5 or later, the Xbox One family, Xumo devices, and the latest Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari.

10. Beat the We're Unable to Play This Content Error

This message usually means your video setup fails the content owner's DRM requirements. Fubo's official fixes target the display chain.

  1. 1.On a computer, switch browsers; try Safari on Mac or Microsoft Edge on Windows.
  2. 2.Disconnect external monitors, or unplug one if you run several.
  3. 3.Unplug the HDMI cable at both ends and reseat it firmly.
  4. 4.Replace any HDMI cable or monitor that is not HDCP 2.2 compatible.

On first-generation Fire TV hardware and various older Android devices, certain channels and on-demand titles simply will not play; switch to different content or another device.

11. Untangle Stream Limits, Location Errors, and Blackouts

Fubo's US-English plans include Family Share + Unlimited Screens: up to 10 simultaneous streams on your Home Network, plus 3 more outside the home on mobile or web, for 13 in total. The Latino plan includes 2 simultaneous streams by default.

Connected TV devices such as Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, smart TVs, and Xbox work from one location at a time; streaming on TVs from two places at once triggers a too-many-locations error. Stop one stream before starting the other, and have family members away from home use mobile or web.

Blackouts are set by leagues, content owners, and networks, not by Fubo. If a blackout message looks wrong, check alternate channels in the guide, enter your ZIP code at fubo.tv/gamefinder, and verify the Home ZIP Code field under My Account at fubo.tv. Devices you travel with must log in from your home area once every 30 days to keep regional sports networks working.

Getting the 4K World Cup Feed to Behave

Every World Cup match streams in 4K on the FOX 4K and FS1 4K channels through Fubo, but the requirements are strict. You need a 4K-compatible device, an Elite base plan or above (or the World Cup 4K add-on), the latest version of the app, an HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 compatible cable, and 25 Mb/s or faster internet. Some events also call for an HDR10-compatible display, so check your screen's specifications if HDR content will not play.

Two limitations are by design. Fubo cannot record 4K content with Cloud DVR, and pause, rewind, and fast-forward are unavailable during live 4K broadcasts. Standard feeds do work with the Unlimited Cloud DVR, which can record individual matches, every match from one country, or the whole tournament through Recording Options.

Official Ways to Catch the Match While Fubo Recovers

If Fubo is mid-outage and kickoff will not wait, your subscription still works elsewhere. Fubo logins act as TV Everywhere credentials in the FOX One app (foxone.com), covering FOX Network, your local FOX station, FS1, FS2, and other Fox channels in your plan. Fox carries all 104 matches in English, 70 on FOX and 34 on FS1, with every match in the FOX One and FOX Sports apps.

Fox also streams two matches free on Tubi, its legitimately free service: the Mexico vs South Africa opener on June 11 at 3 p.m. ET and USA vs Paraguay on June 12 at 9 p.m. ET.

When It Is Time to Contact Fubo

Before you reach out, isolate the problem by trying the same program on a different compatible device. If it plays there, the first device is the culprit; if it fails everywhere, the issue sits with Fubo and support needs to know.

The help center at support.fubo.tv/hc/en-us hosts the Common Troubleshooting Steps article and the status page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Fubo suddenly stop working on my older Fire TV or Android device?

Fubo ended support for Fire TV and Android devices that cannot update to Android OS 7.0 (Nougat). Since February 5, 2026 they show an error at launch because Fubo forced an update they cannot run. The only fix is a supported device.

What internet speed do I need for World Cup matches in 4K?

Fubo calls for 25 Mb/s or faster for 4K; test at fast.com. You also need a 4K-compatible device, the latest app version, an HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 cable, and an Elite base plan or above or the World Cup 4K add-on.

Why can't I pause or rewind a live 4K match on Fubo?

That is expected behavior, not a glitch. Fubo does not support pause, rewind, or fast-forward during live 4K broadcasts, and 4K content cannot be recorded with Cloud DVR either. Watch the standard feed if you need those controls.

How many screens can stream Fubo at the same time?

US-English plans allow 10 simultaneous streams on your Home Network plus 3 outside the home on mobile or web, 13 in total. The Latino plan includes 2 by default, and TV devices work from one location at a time.

Can I watch the World Cup in Spanish on Fubo?

Yes. Live Spanish-language coverage airs on Telemundo and Universo, both part of the Fubo Latino plan since June 10, 2026. The Latino plan costs $19.99 per month for monthly subscribers, or $189.99 per year on the annual option.
