When your Fairphone 5 gets stuck on an update, it can feel like a step backward for a phone built to last. You might see a download that never starts, an error message during installation, or the update option just won't appear. Let's get your phone back on track with the latest software.
Free Up Storage Space First
Android updates need breathing room. Head to Settings > Storage and see how much free space you have. A major Android version update can easily require 5 GB or more. If you're running low, start by clearing cached data from apps or moving photos to cloud storage. Since the Fairphone 5 doesn't have expandable storage via microSD, managing internal space is key.
Check Your Wi-Fi Connection
Make sure you're on a stable Wi-Fi network, as large updates won't download over mobile data. Try loading a webpage to test the connection. If it's slow, restart your router. I've found that community Wi-Fi networks or corporate networks sometimes block the ports needed for update servers, so a home network is your best bet.
Restart Your Fairphone 5
This is the classic fix for a reason. Press and hold the Power button for about 10 seconds until the device restarts. If that doesn't work due to a deeper hang, you can use the unique advantage of your phone: pop off the back cover, remove the battery for 30 seconds, then reinsert it and power on. A fresh start clears out temporary glitches that can block an update.
Clear the Google Play Services Cache
Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps. Tap the three-dot menu, select Show system apps, and find Google Play services. Tap on it, then go to Storage & cache and tap Clear cache. Don't clear the storage/data, as that can cause other issues. This cleans up the service that often handles update communications.
Check for Manual Update Files
Fairphone, true to its repairable ethos, sometimes provides manual update images. Visit the official Fairphone support website and navigate to the Fairphone 5 section. Look for any posted OTA (Over-the-Air) update zip files and instructions for sideloading. This method bypasses the standard update checker entirely and can work when the automated process fails.
Reset Your Network Settings
Network configuration errors are a common culprit. Go to Settings > System > Reset options. Tap Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth. This will forget all your saved networks and Bluetooth pairings, so you'll need to reconnect to your Wi-Fi afterward. Once reconnected, try checking for the update again.
Try Updating at a Different Time
When Fairphone rolls out a new security patch or Android version, a surge of users hitting the servers can cause timeouts. If you're getting server errors, wait a few hours or try late in the evening. The company's promise of 8+ years of updates is fantastic, but their server infrastructure might not be as massive as Google's or Samsung's.
Ensure Sufficient Battery and Use a Good Charger
Your phone needs to be above 50% battery, or preferably plugged in, to install an update. Use the official 30W USB-PD charger that came with your Fairphone 5 or a certified equivalent. While the 30W charging is considered slow by flagship standards, it's more than enough to keep the phone powered during an update. Avoid using old or low-power chargers during this process.
Check for App Conflicts in Safe Mode
Boot your phone into Safe Mode to see if a third-party app is causing trouble. Press and hold the power button, then tap and hold the "Power off" option on your screen until you see a prompt to reboot to Safe Mode. In this mode, only system apps run. Try checking for the update here. If it works, a recently installed app is likely the cause.
Verify Your Device is Eligible
It's worth double-checking that the update you're seeing is actually for your device. Go to Settings > About phone and check your model number and current Android version. While the Fairphone 5 is guaranteed long-term support, regional rollouts can be staggered. Your phone might simply be in a later batch for the update.
