When your Fairphone 5 won't send texts, it can be incredibly frustrating, especially on a device built for reliability. Messages might get stuck on "Sending," fail with an error, or just disappear into the void. Let's get it working again.
Start With a Simple Restart
The quickest fix is often just restarting your phone. Press and hold the Power button for about 10 seconds until the device powers off and restarts. This clears out any temporary software glitches that might be blocking the Messages app or your cellular connection.
Check Your Mobile Signal
Text messages (SMS/MMS) need a cellular signal to send. Look at the signal bars in the top right of your screen. If you're in a low-signal area, try moving to a window or stepping outside. You can also toggle Airplane Mode on and off to force the modem to reconnect. Swipe down twice from the top of the screen and tap the Airplane Mode icon, wait 10 seconds, then tap it again.
Verify Your Mobile Data
If you're trying to send a picture message (MMS) or use RCS chats, you need mobile data turned on, even if you're on Wi-Fi. Go to Settings > Network & internet > Mobile network and make sure Mobile data is enabled. Also, check that your data isn't paused or restricted for the Messages app in your data usage settings.
Clear the Messages App Cache
A corrupted cache in the messaging app can cause sending failures. Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps. Find and tap on Messages (or your default SMS app). Tap Storage & cache, then tap Clear cache. This won't delete your messages, just temporary data. Try sending a text again.
Check for App Updates
An outdated version of Google Messages or your carrier's messaging app could have a bug. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, and go to Manage apps & device > Updates available. See if there's an update for "Messages" or any carrier services app and install it.
Review Your Blocked Numbers
If texts are failing to send to one specific contact, you might have accidentally blocked them. Open your Phone app, tap the three-dot menu, and go to Settings > Blocked numbers. If the person's number is listed, tap the X to unblock them and try sending again.
Reset Your Network Settings
This is a more thorough step that resets all your Wi-Fi, mobile data, and Bluetooth connections. Go to Settings > System > Reset options. Tap Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth and confirm. You'll need to reconnect to Wi-Fi networks and re-pair Bluetooth devices afterward, but it often resolves persistent messaging issues tied to the network stack.
Reinsert Your SIM Card
One of the great features of the Fairphone 5 is how easy it is to access the SIM tray. Power the phone off completely. Use the included SIM tool or a paperclip to pop open the tray on the side of the phone. Remove the SIM card, wait 30 seconds, then firmly reinsert it and power the phone back on. This re-establishes the connection with your carrier's network.
Check Your Carrier's Message Center Number
This is an older setting, but if it's wrong, no SMS will send. You'll need to find the correct SMSC number for your carrier (a quick web search for "[Your Carrier] message center number" should find it). Then, open your Phone app and dial *#*#4636#*#* to access testing menus. Tap Phone information, scroll down to "SMSC," enter the correct number, and tap Update.
Try a Different Messaging App
To rule out a problem with your default app, try installing a simple third-party SMS app like Textra or QKSMS from the Play Store. Set it as your default when prompted and see if you can send a message. If you can, the issue is with your original app, and you may need to clear its data (warning: this deletes your message history) or stick with the new one.
Contact Your Mobile Carrier
If you've tried everything, the problem might be on your carrier's end. There could be an outage in your area, a provisioning issue with your account, or SMS/MMS might be disabled on your plan. Give them a call or use their online support chat. They can check your line and often refresh your connection from their side.
