You open the Eero app and it just spins. Can't find your gateway. Network unavailable. Something went wrong. The Eero Max 7 doesn't have a web interface, so the app is your only way in, and when it won't cooperate, you're locked out of managing your mesh completely.
The fastest move: close the Eero app completely, turn Bluetooth on, make sure Location and Local Network permissions are granted, then reopen. The app uses Bluetooth for local discovery and Local Network to actually talk to the gateway, so missing either of those permissions is the most common single reason setup fails.
If that doesn't do it, work through the rest of these fixes.
Check the Eero App Permissions
On iOS, open Settings, scroll down to Eero, and confirm Bluetooth, Location, and Local Network are all set to Allow. That Local Network toggle is the one people miss most often. Without it, the app can discover the Max 7 over Bluetooth but can't actually push configuration changes or see your network status. On Android, long-press the Eero app icon, tap App Info, then Permissions, and make sure Location and Nearby Devices are both granted.
Turn Off VPN and Private Wi-Fi Address
A phone-level VPN can block the Eero app from seeing the gateway on your local network. The app talks to the Max 7 over your home LAN, and a VPN reroutes that traffic outside your network. Disable any active VPN in your phone settings, then try the app again.
On iOS, the Private Wi-Fi Address feature can also cause issues. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the info icon next to your home network, and turn off Private Wi-Fi Address. You can turn it back on after the app connects fine.
Force Close and Reopen
On iOS, swipe up from the bottom and swipe the Eero app off the recents screen. On Android, long-press the Eero app icon, tap App Info, then Force Stop. Reopen the app and try again. The Eero app sometimes holds onto a stale connection state, and a clean restart is the quickest way to shake that loose.
Update the Eero App
Open the App Store (iOS) or Play Store (Android) and check if there's an update for the Eero app. The app updates regularly with bug fixes and compatibility improvements, and running an older version can cause network discovery issues. The app requires iOS 13+ or Android 9+, so make sure your phone meets that minimum too.
Get Closer to the Eero Max 7
Bluetooth LE doesn't have great range through walls. For the app to discover the gateway, sit within five to ten feet of it. Once the app connects, you can move freely around the house and it'll stay connected over WiFi. Failed discoveries from another room are often just signal range, not a router problem.
The Eero Max 7 has a larger footprint than earlier models with its quad-stream radios, so place it somewhere accessible for setup rather than tucked behind furniture or in a cabinet.
Power Cycle the Modem and Gateway
Unplug the Eero Max 7 that's serving as your gateway. Also unplug your modem. Wait 30 seconds. Plug the modem back in and let it fully boot (about two minutes). Then plug the Eero Max 7 back in and wait for the LED to cycle from flashing white to solid white, which takes about 90 seconds. Reopen the Eero app.
This clears any half-connected state from the modem or router side, which is common after a power outage or a failed firmware update. The Eero Max 7 updates its firmware automatically through the app, and if that update was interrupted, a power cycle often fixes it.
Do a Soft Reset
If the app still can't find the Max 7, try a soft reset. Press and hold the reset button on the back of the gateway until the LED flashes yellow (up to 8 seconds). This isn't a full factory reset. It clears most temporary glitches and network state without wiping your settings. Wait for the LED to return to solid white, then try the app again.
Delete and Reinstall the Eero App
On iOS, long-press the Eero app icon and tap Remove App. On Android, long-press and tap Uninstall. Reinstall from the App Store or Play Store, sign back in with your Amazon account, and let the app sync your network from the cloud. This clears any local app database corruption that can prevent the app from seeing the gateway even when everything else is working fine.
Factory Reset the Eero Max 7
If none of the above works, a factory reset is the final step. Press and hold the reset button on the back for about 15 seconds. The LED flashes red, then turns white as it boots, and finally blue when it's ready for fresh setup. The whole process takes about five minutes. Open the Eero app and follow the new device flow.
This erases all your network settings, so you'll need to set up your WiFi name, password, and any profiles from scratch. Only do this if you've exhausted the other options. If you have multiple Max 7 nodes, reset only the gateway first and add the others once it's configured.
