You tap the camera feed on your Echo Show 21 and get the spinning circle of doom. Or you try a video call and only see black where your contact's face should be. The 21.5-inch display is great when it works, but a frozen or blank video feed is a common complaint, especially after the latest firmware update.
Quick check first: swipe down from the top of the screen and make sure the camera icon isn't crossed out. If the physical shutter is closed (you'll see a small orange dot near the camera), slide it open. If the feed is still black, move on to the Wi-Fi signal check below.
Check the Camera Privacy Controls
The Echo Show 21 has a physical camera shutter and a software toggle. If the shutter is closed, no app can access the camera. Slide the shutter open and look for the orange indicator to disappear. Then say "Alexa, turn on the camera" or tap the camera icon in the quick settings menu.
If the shutter is open but the feed is still black, check the Alexa app. Open the app, tap Devices, select your Echo Show 21, then Camera. Make sure the camera is enabled in the device settings. A software update can sometimes flip this without warning.
Make Sure the Wi-Fi Signal Is Strong Enough
Video feeds need a solid connection, and the Echo Show 21 supports Wi-Fi 6E on the 6 GHz band for fast streaming. But that higher band has shorter range and doesn't go through walls as well as 2.4 GHz. If your router is in another room or on a different floor, the 6 GHz signal might be too weak for video.
Open the Alexa app, go to Devices, tap your Echo Show 21, then Device Settings > About. Look for "Wi-Fi Signal Strength." If it shows "Weak" or "Very Weak," you have two options: move the router closer or switch the Echo to a lower band. In Device Settings > Network, forget the network and reconnect, selecting the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band instead. 2.4 GHz penetrates walls best and is usually more reliable for video calls.
Restart the Echo Show 21 the Simple Way
Unplug the power adapter from the back of the Echo Show 21, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. That's it. This clears any temporary software glitches that can hang the video pipeline. The device takes about 90 seconds to boot back up, and the video feed usually recovers within a minute after that.
If you don't want to crawl behind the device, you can also restart from settings. Swipe down from the top, tap Settings > Device Options > Restart. Same effect, just a few extra taps.
Disable and Re-enable Fire TV Mode
A known issue with the Echo Show 21 is that Fire TV mode sometimes drops back to the home screen after extended use. This can corrupt the video pipeline for apps like Prime Video, Netflix, or even Live View from a connected camera. If you're seeing a black screen specifically when using Fire TV mode, switch back to the Echo home screen, then launch Fire TV mode again.
In Settings > Fire TV, toggle Fire TV mode off, wait 10 seconds, then toggle it back on. Test the video feed again. If it works, the glitch was just a temporary state. If the problem keeps returning, leave Fire TV mode off and use the built-in Alexa video apps instead until the next firmware update.
Update the Device Software
Amazon pushes firmware updates to Echo devices automatically, but sometimes they don't install right away. An outdated version can have known bugs that cause video feeds to freeze. Say "Alexa, check for software updates" or go to Settings > Device Options > Check for Software Updates. If an update is available, let it install fully before using the video feed again.
I've seen several users report that a pending update was the sole cause of their black video screen. The Echo Show 21 is still relatively new (2024 model), and Amazon has been pushing regular patches for the big 21-inch panel.
Check the Microphone and Camera Permissions for Skills
Older Skills can have interface scaling issues on the Echo Show 21's larger screen. If the video feed is black in a specific app or Skill (like Zoom or Skype or a baby monitor skill), that Skill may not be fully compatible. Go to Settings > Skills & Games, tap the Skill in question, then check that camera and microphone permissions are enabled.
If permissions are correct but the feed is still black, try removing the Skill and re-adding it. This forces a fresh authorization. Some Skills need a second grant of camera access after a firmware update, especially since the Echo Show 21's 21.5-inch panel can confuse older Skill layouts.
Reset Picture Frame Mode (If the Feed Is a Photo Source)
If your black feed is actually the home screen showing nothing instead of your photo rotation, the picture frame mode may have lost its source. A known issue is that picture frame mode resets the photo source after firmware updates. Go to Settings > Home & Clock > Photo Display and re-select your photo source, Amazon Photos, Drive, or whatever you use. Set the rotation interval and confirm the source is active.
This fix is specific to the Echo Show 21's picture frame mode and doesn't affect video calls or camera feeds, but it's a common reason people think the screen is broken when it's really just a configuration reset.
Factory Reset as a Last Option
If the video feed is still blank or stuck loading after all the steps above, a factory reset clears any deeper software corruption. Go to Settings > Device Options > Reset to Factory Defaults. This wipes all your settings, accounts, and saved Wi-Fi networks, so you'll need to set it up again from scratch in the Alexa app.
After the reset, open the Alexa app and re-pair the Echo Show 21. Test the video feed immediately during setup, before adding any Skills or Fire TV mode. If the feed works at that point, a Skill or setting was corrupting it. If the feed still doesn't work even after a fresh setup, contact Amazon support, as the camera hardware itself may be defective.
