You open the Alexa app, tap the plus icon, select Add Device, and pick Echo Dot. The app finds your device, you see its serial number, you enter your Wi-Fi password, and then nothing. Or it hangs at "Connecting to the Internet." Or the light ring spins blue and never turns orange. If you're stuck during Echo Dot (5th Gen) setup, the fix is usually simpler than you think.

First, make sure your phone is on a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network when you start setup, not 5 GHz. The Echo Dot (5th Gen) supports both bands, but the initial pairing process requires your phone to be on the same network the Echo Dot will connect to. If your router uses one SSID for both bands with automatic band steering, your phone might jump to 5 GHz in the middle of setup. That breaks the handshake.

Force Your Phone to 2.4 GHz During Setup

Check your phone's current Wi-Fi band. On iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the info icon next to your network. Under IP address you'll see a "Router" IP field, ignore that. Look for any mention of "5 GHz" in the network name. If your router broadcasts separate SSIDs for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (like "MyHome" and "MyHome_5G"), switch to the 2.4 GHz one. If it's a single SSID with band steering, either temporarily disable the 5 GHz band in your router settings, or move your phone far enough from the router that it can only see the 2.4 GHz signal. Once the Echo Dot is set up and online, you can re-enable 5 GHz and the Dot will pick the best band from then on.

Check Alexa App Permissions

The Alexa app needs two things to find your Echo Dot: Bluetooth and Location permission. The Dot uses Bluetooth Low Energy for the initial discovery handshake. Without that permission, the app will scan forever without finding the device. On an iPhone, go to Settings > Alexa and turn on Bluetooth and Location (set to "While Using the App"). On Android, go to Settings > Apps > Alexa > Permissions and enable both. Also check that Local Network access is allowed on iOS, it's separate from the other permissions and sometimes gets denied by default.

Reset Your Echo Dot (5th Gen)

If the Dot was previously set up to another account or network, it needs a clean slate. Find the Action button on the top of the device, it's the one with the dot icon (a small circle). Press and hold it for 25 full seconds. Don't let go early. The light ring will cycle through different colors and eventually turn solid orange. That's the indication the device has factory reset. Release the button. Now start the setup process again from scratch in the Alexa app.

Move the Echo Dot Closer to Your Router

Setup requires a strong Wi-Fi signal and a solid Bluetooth connection between your phone and the Dot. If the Dot is in a cabinet, behind a TV, or on the opposite side of the house, bring it within 10-15 feet of your router for the initial setup. Once it's connected to your Wi-Fi network and you see a solid blue light ring (meaning it's online), you can move it to its permanent spot. Don't unplug it while moving, just pick it up and walk it there. It'll reconnect automatically.

Simplify Your Wi-Fi Password Temporarily

Some Wi-Fi passwords with special characters (like percent signs, ampersands, or emojis) can cause the Alexa app to fail during the secure handshake. If your password has any of those, consider changing your router's Wi-Fi password to a simple alphanumeric one just for setup. After the Echo Dot is paired, change the password back and reconnect the Dot through the Alexa app. This is an edge case but a common enough one to keep in mind if everything else checks out.

Update the Alexa App

A stale Alexa app version can have bugs in the setup flow. Go to your phone's app store and check for any pending updates. The Echo Dot (5th Gen) requires the app to be on at least iOS 13 or Android 9 (released 2018), but newer is always better. After updating, restart your phone and try pairing again.

Reinstall the Alexa App

If repeated attempts fail in the same spot, the app's local cache may be corrupted. Delete the Alexa app, restart your phone, then reinstall from the App Store or Google Play. Sign in with your Amazon account and start the setup process fresh. This clears any stuck scanning state from previous failed attempts.

The Light Ring Tells You What's Wrong

A solid orange ring means the Dot is in setup mode and waiting to be connected. A pulsing blue ring means the Dot is hearing you but hasn't connected to Wi-Fi yet. A solid blue ring means you're online and good to go. If the light ring stays off entirely, verify the included 15W AC adapter is plugged in securely, the Echo Dot (5th Gen) doesn't have a battery option, so power is everything. Also check your outlet with another device to rule out a tripped breaker or faulty outlet.
