Your Powerbeats Pro 2 won't connect to your phone. They flash their LED at you, show up as "not connected" in Bluetooth settings, or your phone acts like they don't exist. This happens for a few specific reasons with these earbuds, and almost every case is fixable at home without a trip to Apple.
Before anything else, open the Beats app on Android or check Bluetooth settings on iOS. If you're on Android and the Beats app isn't installed, download it first. The app handles pairing on Android devices, and skipping it is the most common reason Powerbeats Pro 2 won't connect there.
The fastest fix for Powerbeats Pro 2 is a proper case reset. Put both earbuds in the case and leave the lid open. Find the system button on the inside of the case, it's a small round button near the USB-C port. Press and hold it for 15 seconds. The front LED flashes red and white when the reset takes hold. Release the button when you see those colors. Close the lid for 10 seconds, then open it next to your unlocked phone.
Start With the Quick Check
Confirm your phone's Bluetooth is actually on from Control Center, not just from Settings. On iOS, swipe down from the top-right corner and check the Bluetooth tile. On Android, pull down the notification shade. An accidentally toggled Bluetooth button is the simplest explanation.
On Android phones, also check that the Beats app has all necessary permissions. The app needs location access on Android for Bluetooth scanning to work. Without it, the Powerbeats Pro 2 won't appear as a discoverable device no matter how many times you put them in pairing mode.
Charge the Case and Earbuds
Powerbeats Pro 2 need enough battery to maintain a stable Bluetooth handshake during pairing. Drop both earbuds in the case and plug the case into power using the USB-C port or set it on a Qi wireless pad. The case accepts 5W input standard, so any USB-C cable or Qi charger works.
The front case LED tells you the charge status. Solid green means there's enough charge. Solid amber means it's getting low. If the LED doesn't light up at all, the case is completely drained. Give it at least 10 minutes on a charger before trying again.
With a full charge you get 8 hours of listening with ANC on, or 10 hours in Adaptive EQ mode. The case itself holds 45 hours total in Adaptive EQ or 36 hours with ANC. Even a partial charge gives you enough for pairing.
Force Restart Your Phone
Before digging into the earbuds, restart your phone. A surprising number of pairing failures are phone-side issues. On iPhone 8 and later, press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. That takes about 15 seconds.
On Android, the restart method varies by manufacturer but holding the power button for 10-15 seconds usually does it. Once the phone boots back up, open the case lid next to it and try pairing again.
Forget the Device and Re-Pair
If your phone has the Powerbeats Pro 2 listed in Bluetooth but refuses to connect, the saved pairing record is probably corrupt. On iOS, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the (i) icon next to your Powerbeats Pro 2, then tap Forget This Device. On Android, go to Settings > Connected Devices > Bluetooth, tap the gear icon next to the earbuds, and select Forget or Unpair.
Now reset the earbuds using the 15-second system button hold. Once the LED flashes red and white, close the lid, then open it next to your unlocked phone. On iOS, the pairing card should appear on screen. On Android, open the Beats app and follow the on-screen prompts.
Check for the iOS 18 Requirement
This one matters if you're on iOS and the heart rate feature won't activate. Powerbeats Pro 2 require iOS 18 or later for the built-in heart rate monitoring to work. If your iPhone is on an older iOS version, heart rate functionality won't appear but the earbuds should still pair for audio.
To check, open Settings > General > Software Update. If iOS 18 or later is available, install it. If your iPhone doesn't support iOS 18, the heart rate monitoring simply won't work on that device, but the Powerbeats Pro 2 function fine as standard Bluetooth earbuds.
Adjust the Ear Hooks
Sometimes the issue isn't connection at all but fit. Powerbeats Pro 2 use a flexible ear hook design that's adjustable. If you're getting intermittent audio dropouts, it might be the earbud moving in your ear, not a Bluetooth problem.
The ear hooks are made of a flexible material that you can bend gently to contour your ear shape. They loosen over time with frequent use. If they feel loose, bend the hook inward slightly for a tighter grip. Be gentle, you don't want to snap them. A proper fit also helps the in-ear detection sensor work correctly.
Clean the Charging Contacts
Pull both earbuds out of the case and look at the metal charging pins at the bottom of each earbud stem and the corresponding contacts inside the case wells. If you see any gunk, lint, or sweat residue on those contacts, the case may not detect the earbuds are inside, which breaks the pairing handshake.
Use a dry, soft-bristle brush like a clean toothbrush to clear debris. For tougher residue, lightly dampen a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher) and gently wipe the contacts. The Powerbeats Pro 2 are rated IPX4, so they handle sweat and light moisture, but don't soak them. Give the alcohol a minute to evaporate before putting the earbuds back in the case.
Check for the Lid Sensor Issue
The Powerbeats Pro 2 case has a known issue where the lid sensor occasionally fails to register that the lid was opened. If you open the case and the LED doesn't light up despite the case having charge, the sensor might be stuck.
Close the lid fully, wait 5 seconds, then open it again firmly. Sometimes the sensor needs a clean break and reconnect. If the LED still doesn't light up, try cleaning the magnetic area around the lid hinge with a dry cotton swab. Debris there can interfere with that sensor. If that doesn't help, the case itself may need service.
Reset Network Settings on iPhone
If resetting the earbuds and forgetting the device hasn't worked, reset your iPhone's network settings. This clears saved Wi-Fi passwords, VPN configurations, and all Bluetooth pairings, but it also clears any deep corruption that's blocking the Powerbeats Pro 2 from pairing.
Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. On Android, the equivalent varies but look for Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth under Settings > System > Reset Options. You'll need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords afterward, so have those handy. Once done, set up the Powerbeats Pro 2 from scratch using the Beats app.
Try a Different Phone
If the Powerbeats Pro 2 connect to someone else's phone but not yours, the earbuds are fine and the issue lives on your phone. If they refuse to pair to anything at all, the earbuds themselves likely need service.
This 30-second test saves a lot of dead-end debugging. Borrow a friend's phone, install the Beats app if it's Android, open the case lid, and hold the system button for 15 seconds. If they pair immediately, you know the hardware is healthy and the problem is your phone's Bluetooth stack.
Update Firmware Through the Beats App
Firmware updates for Powerbeats Pro 2 come through the Beats app on Android and automatically through iOS. If you're on Android and haven't opened the Beats app in a while, do it now. The app checks for firmware updates when it's open and the earbuds are in the case with the lid closed.
On iOS, updates happen in the background when the earbuds are charging in the case near the paired iPhone. Leave them in the case on a charger overnight. If an update was pending and failing mid-install, that can cause connection issues that a fresh reset clears up.
The Powerbeats Pro 2 use AAC and SBC codecs. There's no firmware toggle for that, but the app keeps the earbuds running the latest software Apple has released for them.
