The Powerbeats Pro 2 deliver real ANC in a package that was designed to stay on your ears during a sprint. If the noise cancellation suddenly feels weak or gone entirely, don't assume the hardware is toast. Most of the time it's a software setting, a fit issue, or something simple you can fix in under a minute.

The ear hook design means these buds sit differently than typical stem-style earbuds. ANC relies on a sealed seal inside your ear canal, and the hook angle directly affects that seal. That's unusual for ANC earbuds, and it's the first thing to check if noise is getting through.

Adjust the Ear Hook Angle and Tip Size

Pop out your Powerbeats Pro 2 and look at the ear hooks. They're made of flexible material that can be bent gently to match the contour of your ear. If the hook is too open or too closed, the bud sits slightly off-center in your ear canal and breaks the seal required for effective ANC.

Try bending each hook inward or outward in small increments. The Beats design allows for this, and it's a known adjustment point. While you're at it, swap the ear tip for a larger or smaller size. Beats includes multiple silicone sizes in the box. A firmer tip creates a deeper seal, which directly improves low-frequency cancellation.

Check Which ANC Mode Is Actually On

On iOS, press and hold the volume button on the left or right bud (or the remote if you're using the inline cable) to cycle through modes. On Android, open the Beats app and tap the noise control option. It sounds basic, but it's easy to accidentally toggle into Transparency or Off mode without realizing it.

The Powerbeats Pro 2 uses a physical press on the bud's button to cycle modes. If you felt a press in your pocket or bag, the mode could have changed. Force it back to full ANC manually, then confirm by listening for the characteristic pressure change in your ears.

Clean the Microphone and Sensor Meshes

ANC uses external microphones to sample ambient sound and generate inverse waves. If those mic openings are clogged with earwax, dust, or sweat residue, the ANC processor gets incomplete data and produces weaker cancellation. The Powerbeats Pro 2 has tiny mesh grilles on the outer surface of each bud, near the speaker nozzle.

Use a dry, soft-bristled brush (a clean toothbrush works) to gently sweep across those meshes. Compressed air at low pressure can also dislodge debris. The buds are IPX4 sweat-resistant, but don't use liquids for cleaning. Let them dry fully before testing ANC again.

Reset the Powerbeats Pro 2

Sometimes stale firmware state or a glitch in the ANC processing engine just needs a clean slate. The reset process is straightforward: place both earbuds in the case, open the lid, and press and hold the system button on the inside of the case for 15 seconds. Release when the front LEDs flash red and white.

The buds will disconnect from your phone and need to be re-paired. After pairing, test ANC again. This clears any transient memory corruption that could be interfering with noise cancellation performance.

Update Firmware

On iOS, firmware updates for Powerbeats Pro 2 happen automatically when the buds are in the case, lid open, and near your iPhone with a Wi-Fi connection. On Android, you need the Beats app to manually check for updates. Open the app, tap your earbuds, and look for a firmware update option.

Early firmware versions after the February 2025 launch had some ANC optimization quirks. If you haven't updated since unboxing, newer versions include refinements to the ANC algorithms. Keep the case battery above 50% and don't use Bluetooth-heavy apps during the update.

Check the Case Sensor

There's a known issue where the case sensor occasionally fails to register that the lid is open. If the case doesn't wake properly, the buds might not be in the correct power state for ANC to engage. Open the case firmly, close it, then open it again. If the LED on the front doesn't illuminate, the sensor might be obstructed.

Wipe the inside of the case lid area with a dry cloth to remove any residue. This is a reported behavior in the Powerbeats Pro 2 and can cause weird behavior, including ANC not activating consistently.

Bend the Ear Hooks Back to Shape

Over time, the ear hooks can loosen from their original tension, especially if you wear them for long workouts. This changes how the bud sits in your ear and can reduce ANC effectiveness. Use gentle pressure to bend the hook toward the bud, restoring a tighter grip on your ear cartilage.

Don't bend aggressively. A few degrees of adjustment is usually enough. The hooks are designed for this kind of correction, but they're not meant to be reshaped repeatedly.

When ANC Hardware Might Be the Issue

If none of these steps bring back the full noise cancellation, the feedforward or feedback microphone inside one of the buds could be damaged. These are the small grilles you see on the outside of each earbud, and they're paired with tiny MEMS microphones that can fail if exposed to impact or excessive moisture despite the IPX4 rating.

Beats includes a 1-year limited warranty for manufacturing defects. If your buds are within that window, start a claim. Out of warranty, you're looking at replacement cost. The buds themselves are not user-serviceable for microphones, so hardware failure means a new pair unless the service center offers a single-bud replacement option.
