A completely black or unresponsive screen on your ASUS ROG Phone 9 can stop you mid-game or mid-task. It's a jarring experience, but it's often a temporary software hiccup rather than a permanent hardware failure. The phone might be running just fine in the background, or a crash may have frozen the display. Let's get it working again.
Force Restart Your ROG Phone 9
This is almost always the first step you should take. Press and hold the Power button on the side of the phone for at least 15 seconds. Keep holding it even if the screen stays black. You should feel a vibration and see the ROG logo appear as the phone reboots. This works even if the touchscreen is completely dead.
Charge the Phone Properly
A fully drained battery will show nothing on the screen. Grab your original 65W HyperCharge adapter and a good USB-C cable. Plug it in and wait for 15 to 30 minutes. If the battery was completely empty, it might take a few minutes for any charging indicator to light up. If you see nothing, try a different cable and power source to rule out a charging accessory problem.
You can also try placing it on a Qi wireless charger. The ROG Phone 9 supports 15W wireless charging, so if the USB-C port is damaged or dirty, this is a good alternative to get some power back into the device.
Check for Physical or Impact Damage
Take a close look at the screen. Are there any new cracks, deep scratches, or discolored spots? The ROG Phone 9 is a large, heavy device, and a drop can damage the display even with its protective case. If the phone still vibrates for notifications, makes sounds, or the AniMe Vision matrix on the back lights up, the phone is on but the screen hardware is likely damaged.
Adjust the Screen Brightness Manually
It's possible the brightness was accidentally turned all the way down. Even with a black screen, you can ask Google Assistant for help. Say "Hey Google, turn up the brightness to maximum." If the phone is responsive, this should work. Auto-brightness can sometimes fail, especially after a software update, making the screen appear completely off.
Inspect for Overheating Issues
The Snapdragon 8 Elite chip is powerful but can generate significant heat during long gaming sessions. I've seen phones temporarily shut down the display as a safety measure if they get too hot. If the phone feels very warm to the touch, power it off completely and let it cool down in a well-ventilated area for 30 minutes before trying to turn it back on.
For future gaming, enable Bypass Charging in the Game Genie or Armoury Crate settings when you're plugged in. This routes power directly to the system, bypassing the battery, which significantly reduces heat buildup during play.
Boot into Safe Mode
A recently installed app could be causing a conflict that freezes the display. To check, you need to boot into Safe Mode. First, force restart the phone as described earlier. As soon as you see the ROG logo appear during the reboot, press and hold the Volume Down button. Keep holding it until you see "Safe Mode" in the bottom corner of the screen.
If the display works in Safe Mode, you know a third-party app is the culprit. You can then go to Settings and uninstall apps you recently added until the problem is resolved.
Perform a Factory Reset via Recovery
If the screen is still black but you believe the phone is on, you might need to reset it through the recovery menu. First, power the phone off completely. Then, press and hold the Power button and Volume Up button together. When you feel a vibration, release the Power button but keep holding Volume Up until you see the recovery mode menu.
Use the volume buttons to navigate to "Wipe data/factory reset" and select it with the Power button. This will erase all your data, so it's a last resort before seeking repair. Confirm the reset and then select "Reboot system now."
Look for Moisture or Liquid Damage
While the phone has some seals, it's not fully waterproof. If it was exposed to moisture or high humidity, liquid could interfere with the internal display connector. Power the phone off immediately if you can and leave it in a dry, warm place for at least 48 hours. Avoid using a hair dryer or putting it in rice, as fine particles can cause more harm.
Consider a Software Flash or Professional Repair
If all else fails, the issue is likely hardware. This could be a failed display, a loose internal ribbon cable, or damage to the motherboard. Since the ROG Phone 9 has the unique AniMe Vision matrix on the back, repairs are more specialized. Your next step would be to contact ASUS support or visit an authorized service center for a professional diagnosis.
