Your ROG Ally X won't load a game, or it throws an error when you try to install one from your library. Maybe the Armoury Crate SE app is showing blank tiles, or a game you just installed crashes on launch. While the Ally X doesn't have a disc drive, "won't read" problems show up as corrupted installations, SD card failures, or games that refuse to start.
The first thing to check is your storage space. Open File Explorer and look at your C: drive. If it's nearly full, Windows 11 can't write temp files during installation, which looks exactly like a read failure. Free up space and try again.
If that's not the issue, here's how to work through it.
Why Games Won't Load or Install
Several causes are common on the 2024 ROG Ally X:
- Storage nearly full: The Ally X comes with a 1TB SSD, but if you've loaded it up with AAA titles, there may not be room for installation caches.
- SD card degradation: The microSD slot, while relocated away from the heat source compared to the original Ally, can still see high temperatures during gaming that degrade cheaper cards over time.
- Armoury Crate SE crash: Known to occasionally hang after Windows updates, causing game launch failures.
- HDR toggle glitch: Some games display black or corrupted screens on the Ally X screen when HDR is enabled, but they read and load fine otherwise.
- Windows update state: A pending update sometimes blocks the Windows Store or Xbox app from reading installation files.
- Game file corruption: A partial download or interrupted update can leave the game in a state where it won't launch.
Check Your MicroSD Card Slot
If you're storing games on a microSD card, pull it out and inspect both the card and the slot. Look for any bent pins inside the Ally X's slot. The relocated slot runs cooler than the original Ally, but prolonged gaming sessions at Turbo mode can still push the card into read-error territory.
Test the card in a PC or USB reader. If it reads fine there but not in the Ally X, the slot itself may be the problem. If it doesn't read anywhere, the card is toast. I'd recommend sticking to UHS-I U3 A2 cards rated for sustained write speeds, as cheaper cards tend to fail faster in handheld gaming environments.
Free Up Storage Space
Open Settings > System > Storage and look at the breakdown. If your 1TB SSD is under 10% free space, Windows starts throttling background tasks. Click Temporary files and check the boxes for delivery optimization files and Windows update cleanup. These can clear several gigabytes.
Also check the Apps & features list for any old game installs you don't play anymore. The Ally X's 1TB fills up fast with Call of Duty or Forza installs, which can hit 150GB each.
Toggle HDR Off and On Again
Some games on the ROG Ally X show a black screen or flash wildly at launch due to HDR handshake issues. Open the Command Center (the button on the left side of the screen) and tap the HDR toggle to turn it off. Launch the game again. If it works, you've got a game-specific HDR conflict.
You can keep HDR off globally or toggle it per-game. In my experience, older titles and indie games are the worst offenders. Newer AAA releases tend to handle the handshake better.
Fresh Install Armoury Crate SE
If your game library shows blank tiles or games won't launch from the Armoury Crate SE interface, the app may have corrupted after a Windows update. This is a known issue on the Ally X. Uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, then download the latest version from the ASUS support site.
After reinstalling, let it run its initial setup and scan for installed games. This takes about 5 minutes. Then try launching a game from within Armoury Crate SE again.
Verify and Repair Game Files
Game file corruption is common after a partial download or an interrupted update. You don't need to reinstall the whole game. Open the launcher you use (Steam, Xbox app, or Battle.net) and find the repair option.
In Steam, right-click the game, select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. In the Xbox app, go to the game's page and click the three dots, then Manage > Files > Verify and repair. This only replaces damaged files, not the whole install, and usually takes under 10 minutes on the Ally X's SSD.
Reset the Windows Store Cache
If games from the Xbox app or Microsoft Store won't install or update, the Store's own cache may be stuck. Press Windows Key + R, type wsreset.exe, and hit Enter. A command prompt window will flash open and close, and the Store will relaunch automatically.
This clears the download cache without affecting installed apps. Try the failing install again immediately after. If that doesn't work, check for Windows updates in Settings > Windows Update. The Ally X runs Windows 11 24H2 or later, and sometimes a cumulative update fixes Store authentication errors.
Reset the Ally X While Keeping Your Games
If nothing else has worked and you suspect a deeper software issue, reset Windows. This wipes system caches and settings but keeps your personal files and installed games. Open Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC.
Choose Keep my files. This will reinstall Windows 11 while leaving your game installs intact. The whole process takes about 20-30 minutes. After it boots, update Armoury Crate SE and try launching a game again.
