When your Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K is showing a picture but you're getting no sound, it's usually a quick setting or connection issue. The problem can be with the Fire Stick itself, your TV's audio settings, or an external sound system.

Check Your Remote and TV Volume

First, press the volume up button on your Fire TV remote. Make sure your TV isn't muted using its own remote. Sometimes the Fire Stick remote controls a different volume level than your TV remote, so you need to check both.

Also, try playing a different app or show. If sound works elsewhere, the issue is specific to that one piece of content, not your entire setup.

Restart Your Fire TV Stick

This is the most reliable fix for random glitches. Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Restart. This performs a soft restart that clears temporary software bugs without affecting your data.

If the menu is unresponsive, you can force a reset. Hold down the Back button and the Right directional button on your remote for about 10 seconds. Your device will reboot.

Check Your TV's Audio Output Setting

This is a very common culprit. Using your TV's remote, navigate to its sound or audio settings menu. Look for an option called "Audio Output," "Speakers," or "Sound Output."

Make sure it's set correctly. If you're using your TV's built-in speakers, select TV Speakers or Internal Speakers. If you have a soundbar or receiver connected, it should be set to External Speakers, HDMI ARC, or Optical.

Inspect Your HDMI Connection

A loose HDMI cable can cause a picture without sound. Unplug the Fire Stick's power adapter from the wall and then unplug the HDMI cable from your TV.

Firmly plug the HDMI cable back into your TV's port and reconnect the power. I'd also try a different HDMI port on your TV, as sometimes one port can develop issues.

Adjust the Fire Stick's Audio Settings

On your Fire Stick, go to Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio. Here, you'll find a few key settings. First, check that "Volume Leveler" is turned off, as it can sometimes cause unexpected quietness.

More importantly, go into Audio Format. Try changing this setting. If it's on Best Available, switch it to Dolby Digital or Stereo. Some older TVs or sound systems can't decode the newer audio formats the Fire Stick sends, resulting in silence.

Disable and Re-enable CEC Control

HDMI-CEC is the feature that lets your Fire Stick remote control your TV's power and volume. If this communication gets confused, it can affect sound. On your Fire Stick, go to Settings > Display & Sounds > HDMI CEC Device Control.

Turn off every option listed here, wait a moment, and then turn them all back on. This resets the handshake between your devices.

Check for Software Updates

Amazon regularly releases updates that fix bugs, including audio problems. On your Fire Stick, navigate to Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for Updates.

Install any available update. After it's done, the device will restart. It's a good idea to also check for updates on your TV itself through its settings menu.

Test with Your TV's Built-in Speakers

To isolate the problem, disconnect any external soundbars or receivers. Change your TV's audio output setting back to its internal speakers.

If you get sound this way, you know the issue is with the connection or settings between your TV and your external sound system, not the Fire Stick.

Clear the App Cache and Data

If the sound issue only happens in one app like Netflix or Disney+, the problem is with that app. Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications.

Select the problematic app, then choose Clear cache. If that doesn't work, try Clear data next. Just be aware that clearing data will sign you out and reset the app's settings.

Perform a Factory Reset

If you've tried everything else, a factory reset will return the Fire Stick to its original out-of-the-box state. Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Reset to Factory Defaults.

This will erase all your apps, logins, and preferences, so use it as a last resort. After the reset, you'll need to set up the device again as if it were new, which often resolves deep-seated software conflicts.
