When apps on your Fire TV Cube crash back to the home screen or freeze up, it can stop your streaming dead in its tracks. The fixes here apply whether it's Prime Video, Netflix, Hulu, or any other app from the Amazon Appstore.

Force Close and Relaunch the App

Start by completely closing the app. Press and hold the Home button on your remote for a few seconds to bring up the quick actions menu. Select Apps, highlight the problematic app, and press the Menu button (the one with three lines). Choose Force stop from the pop-up menu. This shuts down the app entirely. You can then launch it fresh from your home screen or apps list.

Restart Your Fire TV Cube

Unplug the power cable from the back of the Cube itself, not just from the wall outlet. Wait a full minute before plugging it back in. This gives the device time to fully clear its memory and reset all its processes. I've found this simple restart fixes a wide variety of app crashes and weird behavior.

Check Your Internet Connection

Since the Cube streams everything, a weak or unstable connection is a common culprit. You can run a network speed test right from the device. Go to Settings > Network and select your Wi-Fi network name, then choose Play Network Test. For reliable HD streaming, you generally want speeds above 15 Mbps. If your Wi-Fi is spotty, remember the Cube has a built-in Ethernet port for a more stable wired connection.

Clear the App's Cache and Data

This is often the most effective fix for a single misbehaving app. Navigate to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications. Find and select the app that's crashing. On its management screen, you'll see options for Clear cache and Clear data. Try clearing the cache first, as this only removes temporary files. If the problem persists, you can try clearing data, but be aware this will erase all app settings and log you out, so you'll need to sign back in.

Update the Problem App

Outdated apps can have bugs that cause crashes. Go to the home screen and select Apps from the top menu. Scroll to the right to find the Appstore icon and open it. Select the menu icon (three lines) in the top-left corner and go to App Updates. If the app you're having trouble with is listed, update it. You can also set updates to happen automatically here.

Update the Fire TV Software

An outdated system software can cause compatibility issues with newer apps. Your Cube should check for updates automatically, but you can manually check. Go to Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for Updates. If an update is available, install it. The device will restart during this process.

Uninstall and Reinstall the App

If clearing data didn't help, a fresh install is the next step. Go back to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications, select the app, and choose Uninstall. Confirm the action. Then, go back to the Amazon Appstore, search for the app, and download it again. This ensures you have a completely clean version with no corrupted files.

Check for a Service Outage

Sometimes the issue isn't your Cube at all. If a specific app like Netflix or Disney+ won't load, the service itself might be down. You can quickly check a site like Downdetector.com on your phone or computer to see if other users are reporting problems. If there's a widespread outage, you'll just have to wait for the provider to fix it on their end.

Free Up Storage Space

The Fire TV Cube has limited internal storage. If it's nearly full, apps can struggle to function or update properly. To check, go to Settings > My Fire TV > About and look at Storage. If you're running low, head to Manage Installed Applications and consider uninstalling apps you no longer use. You can also clear the cache for multiple apps at once under Settings > Applications > Appstore > Clear Cache.

Perform a Factory Reset

If every single app is crashing and nothing else has worked, a factory reset is the final step. This will erase all your settings, logins, and installed apps, returning the Cube to its original out-of-the-box state. To do this, go to Settings > My Fire TV > Reset to Factory Defaults. You'll have to go through the initial setup process again, including logging into your Amazon account and re-downloading all your apps.
