A flashing white light on the AirPods 4 case means the buds are in pairing mode, broadcasting a Bluetooth signal. They'll keep flashing until something actually pairs with them. If no iPhone, iPad, or Mac picks up the handshake, you'll see that white light forever. The fix is usually simpler than you think.
Start with the fastest fix: unlock your iPhone and hold the open case within a few feet of it. The setup card that says Connect only shows up when the iPhone screen is on and unlocked. Wake the phone, swipe to unlock, and the card should slide up within 10 seconds.
Before diving deeper, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Find My iPhone and make sure Find My is on. The AirPods first-time pairing relies on the iCloud handshake, and a signed-out account or turned-off Find My can quietly block that setup card from appearing.
Wake and Unlock the iPhone First
Bring the open AirPods 4 case within arm's reach of your iPhone, wake the screen, and unlock it with Face ID or your passcode. Don't tap anything else. Just hold the case open next to the phone for about 10 seconds. The pairing card should appear.
If nothing happens, get closer. Bluetooth Low Energy advertising range is short, especially if the phone is in a pocket or bag.
Check Bluetooth Is On and Working
Open Settings > Bluetooth. Make sure the toggle is on. If you see other Bluetooth devices listed and responding, Bluetooth is fine. If the screen looks frozen or no devices appear, force-restart the iPhone (Volume Up, Volume Down, hold Side button until Apple logo appears) and try again.
AirPods 4 need a healthy Bluetooth stack to detect. A quick force restart clears up any temporary glitches.
Close the Lid to Restart Pairing
Sometimes the case gets stuck in an advertising loop. Close the lid completely and wait a full 30 seconds. Open it again next to your unlocked iPhone. The advertising state resets when the lid closes, giving you a fresh handshake attempt.
If the lid doesn't seem to register, press down on it firmly. A known issue with the AirPods 4 case is the lid sensor failing to detect closure. A clean, firm press helps the sensor reset.
Forget the AirPods From Bluetooth Settings
If you've paired these AirPods 4 to this iPhone before, the saved Bluetooth record can prevent a fresh connection. Open Settings > Bluetooth, find your AirPods 4 in the list (they might show as Connected or Not Connected), tap the (i) icon, then tap Forget This Device. Confirm. Now open the case lid near the iPhone. The iPhone treats them as new and should show the pairing card.
Perform a Full Factory Reset
If forgetting didn't help, do a full reset. Place both buds in the case. Close the lid and wait 30 seconds. Open the lid. Double-tap the front of the case three times in quick succession, once while the status light is on, again when the light flashes white, and again when it flashes faster. The light will flash amber, then white. This is the correct reset method for AirPods 4; the old button-hold method doesn't apply here.
The reset clears all internal pairing state. After it finishes, the case goes back into flashing-white pairing mode but from a clean slate. Your iPhone should now pair without issues.
Check for Find My Activation Lock
If you bought the AirPods 4 used, they might be locked to the previous owner's Apple ID through Find My. Apple rolled out this protection across all AirPods models, and it prevents pairing to a different Apple ID until the original owner removes them from their account.
You can't bypass this. The previous owner has to open iCloud Find My, select the AirPods, and remove them. Until that happens, the case will keep flashing white and refuse to connect to anyone.
Try a Different Apple Device
Bring the open case near another iPhone, iPad, or Mac signed into iCloud. If the AirPods pair successfully there, the problem was with your original iPhone, not the buds. Once paired anywhere on your iCloud account, they sync to all your other Apple devices automatically. If they don't pair to any Apple device, the AirPods themselves may need service.
Pair a Single Earbud First
If the case keeps flashing and nothing sees the AirPods, try pairing just one bud. Take one AirPod out of the case, leave the other inside with the lid open, and hold it near your unlocked iPhone. A stuck stereo handshake can break when only one bud is advertising. Once that one pairs, drop it back in, take out the second bud, and the pair will sync on the next open.
