When your Nothing Phone 2a goes silent or the volume is barely a whisper, it can turn a great device into a frustrating one. Sound issues can pop up from simple software glitches to settings that got changed by accident. The good news is you can usually fix it yourself without much hassle.

To separate hardware from software, open a online speaker test and play the channel tones. What you hear, or do not hear, tells you which fixes below matter most.

Check Your Volume and Sound Mode

This is always the first place to look. While you're on the home screen or in an app, press the volume up button on the side of your Phone 2a. You should see the volume slider appear on screen.

Make sure it's not all the way down. Also, swipe down from the top of your screen to open the Quick Settings panel and check if the sound mode is set to Silent or Vibrate. Tap the sound icon to cycle through Sound, Vibrate, and Silent modes.

Disconnect Any Bluetooth Devices

If you've used wireless headphones or a speaker recently, your Phone 2a might still be trying to send audio there. Open the Quick Settings panel again by swiping down twice from the top.

Look for the Bluetooth tile and make sure it's turned off. If you want to be thorough, go into Settings > Connected devices > Previously connected devices and see if anything is still listed as active.

Clean the Speaker Grilles

The Nothing Phone 2a has a distinctive design with speaker grilles along the top edge and bottom. Over time, pocket lint and dust can get packed in there, muffling the sound significantly.

I'd grab a soft, clean toothbrush or a small brush with soft bristles. Gently brush across the grilles to dislodge any debris. You can also use a can of compressed air, but hold it upright and use short bursts from a few inches away to avoid pushing moisture into the speaker.

Review App-Specific Sound Settings

Sometimes the problem isn't with your phone's system, but with a single app. If YouTube is quiet but your ringtone is loud, the app's internal settings might be the culprit.

Open the app that's having sound issues. Start playing some media, then press your phone's volume buttons. A small gear icon should appear next to the volume slider. Tap that gear, and it will show you separate volume controls for Media and that specific app. Make sure they're turned up.

Check Do Not Disturb and Focus Modes

Nothing OS has Focus modes, which are similar to Do Not Disturb. If one is active, it could be blocking all sounds. Swipe down from the top to open Quick Settings and look for a moon icon or a label like "Work" or "Sleep."

If you see one, tap it to turn it off. For more control, go to Settings > Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb. Check the rules and schedules here to make sure they aren't activating at unexpected times.

Force Restart Your Phone 2a

A quick reboot clears out temporary software bugs that can affect the audio system. Press and hold the Power button on the right side of your phone for about 10 to 15 seconds.

Keep holding it until you see the Nothing logo appear on screen, then let go. Your phone will restart. This doesn't delete any of your data, it just gives the system a fresh start.

Boot Into Safe Mode

If the sound works fine after a restart but then acts up again later, a third-party app you installed could be causing a conflict. Booting into Safe Mode temporarily disables all downloaded apps.

To enter Safe Mode, press and hold the Power button until the power menu appears. Then, tap and hold the "Power off" option on your screen. A prompt will ask if you want to reboot to Safe Mode. Tap "OK."

If your sound works perfectly in Safe Mode, you know a downloaded app is the problem. Restart normally to exit Safe Mode, and try uninstalling apps you installed around the time the sound issues began.

Corrupted cache data for system services can lead to odd behavior. Go to Settings > Apps > See all apps. Tap the three-dot menu in the top right and select "Show system."

Now, look for and select "Android System" or "Media Storage." Tap "Storage & cache," then tap "Clear cache." Do not tap "Clear storage" or "Clear data," as that can delete your media files. Repeat this for the "Bluetooth" app as well.

Update Nothing OS

Software updates often include fixes for audio bugs and other glitches. Make sure your Phone 2a is running the latest version of Nothing OS. Connect to Wi-Fi, then go to Settings > System > System update.

Tap "Check for update." If an update is available, download and install it. Your phone will restart during this process, so make sure you have a bit of time before you need to use it.
