When your Nothing Phone 2a starts acting up with apps that freeze or close unexpectedly, it breaks the flow of your day. This can happen for a bunch of reasons, but the good news is you can usually fix it yourself without too much hassle. I'd start with a simple restart, as that clears out temporary glitches that can build up in the system.

Restart Your Phone 2a

This is the universal first step for a reason. A restart clears the phone's working memory and stops any background processes that might be interfering. Just press and hold the power button until the power menu pops up, then tap "Restart." If the screen is completely frozen, you can force a restart by holding the power button down for a full 10 to 15 seconds until you feel it vibrate and see the Nothing logo.

Update the Problem App

App developers are constantly pushing out updates to squash bugs. If one app in particular is crashing, it's very likely there's a fix waiting in the Play Store. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture in the top right, and go to "Manage apps & device." Under the "Updates available" section, you can update everything at once or just pick the troublesome app.

Force Stop the App

Sometimes an app gets stuck in a bad state and needs a hard reset. Force stopping it is like pulling the plug and plugging it back in. Go to Settings > Apps, find the app that's crashing, and tap on it. On the app's info page, tap "Force stop." Wait a moment, then open the app again from your home screen.

Clear the App's Cache

Apps store temporary data, called cache, to load faster. Over time, this cache can become corrupted and cause crashes. Clearing it is safe and won't delete your login info or saved data. In the same app info screen (Settings > Apps > [App Name]), tap "Storage & cache." Then, hit "Clear cache." Try the app again to see if it's more stable.

Check Your Network Connection

Apps that rely on the internet, like social media or banking apps, can crash or fail to load if your connection is spotty. Toggle your Wi-Fi off and on, or try switching to mobile data for a minute to test. If you're on Wi-Fi, a quick router restart can often solve weird connectivity hiccups that affect app performance.

Free Up Storage Space

Your Phone 2a needs breathing room to operate smoothly. If your storage is nearly full, apps can struggle to function properly. Head to Settings > Storage to see what's taking up space. You can offload old photos to Google Photos, delete downloaded files you don't need, or uninstall apps you haven't used in months.

Update Nothing OS

System updates include important stability patches and bug fixes that can resolve app compatibility issues. Make sure your Phone 2a is running the latest version of Nothing OS. Go to Settings > System > System update and tap "Check for update." If an update is available, it's a good idea to install it while connected to Wi-Fi.

Reinstall the App Completely

If clearing the cache didn't help, the next step is to clear the app's data, which will reset it to a fresh, just-installed state. Be aware this will erase your settings and login information within that app. In the app's storage menu, tap "Clear storage" or "Clear data." After confirming, open the app and log back in. If problems persist, uninstall the app entirely and reinstall it from the Play Store.

Check for Problematic Apps in Safe Mode

If apps are crashing randomly and you can't pinpoint one culprit, a third-party app you installed might be causing conflicts. Booting into Safe Mode temporarily disables all downloaded apps. To enter Safe Mode, press and hold the power button, then long-press the "Power off" option on your screen until you see the Safe Mode prompt. If the crashes stop in Safe Mode, you know a downloaded app is the cause. You'll need to restart your phone to exit Safe Mode and then uninstall recent apps one by one to find the offender.
