Nearly a year after launching on current-gen hardware, Techland confirmed Tuesday it is canceling the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Dying Light: The Beast, saying the 13-year-old consoles cannot run the game without unacceptable compromises. The decision ends months of uncertainty surrounding the last-gen ports, which were originally announced alongside the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC versions in 2024. Techland released the current-gen and PC editions in September 2025 while promising to continue work on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One builds.

That work is now finished. In a statement posted to X, Techland said the game's open world, advanced visuals, and combat and traversal systems "all depend on processing power and memory that previous-generation consoles simply cannot provide."

"As development progressed, it became clear that bringing the game to those platforms would require compromises that would prevent us from delivering the experience we set out to create," the studio wrote. The cancellation carries more weight given the game's origins. Dying Light: The Beast started life as downloadable content for Dying Light 2, which launched in 2022 and ran competently on both last-gen consoles.

What was once a manageable expansion grew into a standalone title, and its ambitions outgrew hardware first released in 2013.

Techland was direct about the reasoning. "This was not a matter of choosing to leave those platforms behind," the company said. "Rather, it reflected the technical realities of development and our commitment to delivering the best possible experience."

Any player who pre-ordered the game on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One is eligible for a full refund, Techland confirmed. The move makes Dying Light: The Beast a current-gen exclusive alongside the PC version. It launched on September 19, 2025, and features Kyle Crane, the protagonist of the original Dying Light, returning as a playable character with genetic mutations granting him special abilities.

Techland released a major update in March called Restored Land, which added a persistent survival mode where zombie kills remain permanent and materials become finite.
