Premium Spotify subscribers can now transform their playlists into DJ-ready mixes with a single tap. The streaming service launched Smart Reorder earlier this week, an automated tool that rearranges tracks based on beats per minute and musical key to create smooth transitions between songs.

Smart Reorder builds on Spotify's existing Mix feature for mixed playlists, which first gave Premium users control over transition points between tracks last August. Since that initial rollout, listeners have streamed more than 220 million hours of mixed playlists according to company data.

The new enhancement automatically clusters songs with similar tempo and harmonic compatibility, eliminating jarring shifts in energy or tone throughout a listening session. To access the feature, Premium members open any playlist in the Spotify app and tap "Mix," then "Edit." A Smart Reorder button appears at the bottom of the editing screen.

Tapping it instantly reorganizes the entire playlist based on BPM and key data available for every track in Spotify's catalog. The system prioritizes harmonic and tempo compatibility to maintain consistent flow from one song to the next.

The launch comes as music streaming services compete to improve audio transitions between tracks. Apple Music introduced its AutoMix feature with iOS 26 last year, using artificial intelligence to create DJ-like transitions automatically.

YouTube Music has yet to add similar transition capabilities to its platform.

Spotify's approach offers more granular control than Apple's fully automated system. While Smart Reorder handles the sequencing automatically, users can still customize individual song transitions within the Mix editor if they prefer manual adjustments.

The company warns that applying Smart Reorder will override any existing custom sorting on a playlist, requiring users who have meticulously arranged their collections to re-establish preferred orders after using the automated tool.

Earlier this year, Spotify expanded its AI playlist creation tools by bringing "Prompted Playlists" to Premium subscribers in additional markets including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and Sweden. The feature had previously launched in the United States and Canada.

Smart Reorder is available now to all Spotify Premium subscribers globally through the latest version of the mobile app.
