Sony Interactive Entertainment generated at least $2.3 billion selling first-party PlayStation titles on PC and Xbox platforms, according to new financial data.

The company's "Other Software" category, which tracks revenue from games sold outside PlayStation consoles, reached $2.37 billion in cumulative earnings.

This revenue stream represents Sony's strategic shift away from strict console exclusivity. Major PlayStation franchises including Marvel's Spider-Man, God of War Ragnarok, and Ghost of Tsushima have launched on PC in recent years. MLB The Show, considered a first-party Sony franchise, now releases simultaneously on Xbox formats alongside PlayStation.

The cross-platform strategy arrives as PlayStation 5 hardware sales show signs of maturity. Sony shipped 92 million PS5 consoles worldwide since the system's November 2020 launch, with 8 million units sold during the October-December 2025 quarter.

While this represents a 16% decline from the same period last year, PlayStation's monthly active users grew 2% to a record 132 million accounts.

Sony's overall gaming division remains its largest business unit with ¥1.6 trillion in revenue, despite a 4.1% year-over-year decline attributed to lower hardware sales. The company reported ¥377 billion net income on ¥3.7 trillion total revenue for the quarter ending December 31, 2025.

Microsoft has pursued a more aggressive multiplatform approach, bringing tentpole franchises like Gears of War and Forza Horizon to PlayStation 5.

Microsoft's 2026 Xbox lineup, including major titles like Fable and Halo, will launch on PlayStation, marking a historic shift away from console exclusivity. Sony's measured expansion to PC and Xbox appears designed to extend game shelf life while maintaining PlayStation's hardware ecosystem advantage.

The company has secured sufficient memory supplies through the end of 2026 to meet holiday demand.

Sony plans to "prioritize monetization of the installed base" by expanding software and network services revenue as console sales gradually decline during the PS5's later lifecycle phase.

PlayStation Plus subscription services "significantly contributed" to quarterly results, with PlayStation Store revenue hitting all-time highs. Sony launched cloud streaming for supported PS5 games in November 2025 as a PlayStation Plus Premium benefit.

Sony's multiplatform earnings demonstrate the growing importance of software revenue diversification in the console business.

As the PlayStation 5 approaches its sixth year on the market, the $2.3 billion from PC and Xbox sales provides crucial revenue stability alongside traditional console game sales.
