Samsung's naming strategy for its next foldables just flipped upside down. The tall, traditional Galaxy Z Fold successor is now the "Ultra." The short, wide version is just the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

A Bluetooth SIG certification listing spotted by SumahoDigest confirms the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra moniker is real, with five regional model variants (SM-F976C, SM-F976Q, SM-F976Z, SC-56G, SCG39) registered in the database. The certification hardware carries model numbers that follow from the Galaxy Z Fold 7 (SM-F966) and Fold 6 (SM-F956), positioning it as the direct successor.

Until recently, reports referred to the two devices as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 (the tall model) and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide (the short, passport-style variant). That has changed. The wider handset with the shorter aspect ratio will reportedly carry the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 name, while the traditional book-style foldable gets the Ultra badge. The confusion matters because the hardware story is actually the opposite of what the names suggest. The Z Fold 8 Ultra, despite its premium moniker, is described as a modest iterative update to the Z Fold 7 with a similar footprint. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 (the "Wide" model) is the more radical design departure, offering a wider cover display that lets users handle messaging and browsing without opening the device.

Specs leaked across multiple sources paint a clearer picture of the divide. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra packs a 5,000mAh battery, a 200MP main camera with 50MP ultrawide and 3x telephoto lenses, and measures 4.1mm unfolded. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide) carries a 4,800mAh battery, a lighter 201-gram build, and a dual-camera setup with a 50MP sensor. Both support 45W wired charging and run on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset.

Both models also feature what Samsung describes as a "zero feel crease," using ultra-thin glass and a laser-drilled metal support plate to reduce the visible fold line. The crease minimization reportedly brings the devices in line with the Oppo Find N6.

Samsung is expected to unveil the full lineup at a London Unpacked event on July 22, alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 8, Galaxy Watch 9, and Samsung's first Android XR smart glasses. The Fold 8 Wide's initial production target of 1 million units has already been increased by 200,000 to 300,000 units, driven by strong anticipated demand and the Galaxy Z Fold 7's sales performance of roughly 6 million units.
