A trailer about Wolverine desperately clutching a fragile, irreplaceable photograph has become the internet's most visible protest sign against Sony killing physical discs.

Insomniac Games dropped the "Ain't No Hero" cinematic trailer for Marvel's Wolverine on July 16, showing Logan slashing through enemies across time periods, Lady Deathstrike shredding a photo he can't stop reaching for, and Sabretooth appearing in his classic yellow suit.

The YouTube comments loaded, and nobody talked about any of it. The top comment, from user ErrantRob, reads: "You know who isn't the hero The killer of physical." It racked up over 10,000 likes within a day. The second most-liked comment: "Wolverine was really getting PHYSICAL in this trailer. He has such a DISCtinct presence." Sort by "Top" and you scroll past dozens of disc-protest posts before finding a single remark about Lady Deathstrike.

Sony announced at the beginning of July that it will cease physical disc production for new games starting January 2028. Existing disc libraries stay usable, but new releases ship digital-only. Retail boxes get download codes. Sony frames it as following consumer trends toward digital.

Fans see it as the end of game ownership. The trailer has amassed more than 1 million views and nearly 5,000 comments since its debut. PlayStation's social accounts are being flooded with the same anger on every post, regardless of subject.

The backlash has spread beyond Insomniac. The team behind co-op game Hela: of Mice & Magic announced it would take a social media break after its trailer was flooded by commenters directing anger toward Sony. The Duskfade team found itself in the same situation after announcing a PS5 pre-order, posting: "Hey everybody, we love physical games too!"

Insomniac had nothing to do with Sony's policy. The studio already confirmed Marvel's Wolverine ships with an actual disc in the box, making it likely among the last major first-party PlayStation titles to do so. The game launches September 15 as a PS5 exclusive.

The outrage has real teeth beyond comments. A Change.org petition passed 172,000 signatures within roughly six days.

Dutch consumer group Stichting Massaschade & Consument sued on behalf of roughly 1.7 million users, alleging Sony's digital control keeps prices artificially high. A March 2026 firmware update already requires 30-day server check-ins to keep newly purchased digital games playable.

PlayStation's largest disc-making factory is already retooling from game discs to micro optics. Reversing course would mean finding a new production site.

Sony appears to be betting on patience, waiting for the outrage to exhaust itself. But every disc edition of Marvel's Wolverine purchased between now and January 2028 feels less like a transaction and more like a timestamp.
