Microsoft will bring its Gaming Copilot AI assistant to Xbox Series X/S consoles later this year, expanding the tool beyond its current beta availability on Windows PCs and mobile devices.
The announcement came during a Game Developers Conference panel earlier this week, where Xbox gaming AI partner group product manager Sonali Yadav confirmed the console rollout for 2026.
"I'm excited to announce that later this year. We will bring Gaming Copilot to the current-generation consoles,"
Yadav stated at the event attended by GamesRadar+.
Gaming Copilot functions as an in-game assistance tool that answers questions about gameplay mechanics, provides strategy guides, and offers personalized recommendations based on play history. Players can ask specific queries like what materials are needed to craft items in Minecraft or request help with difficult sections without leaving their game session.
The AI assistant has operated in beta form across multiple platforms since last year, accessible through the Xbox Game Bar overlay on Windows PCs and Command Center buttons on ROG Ally handheld devices. On consoles, voice input will likely become the primary interaction method given controller typing limitations.
Microsoft positions Gaming Copilot as an alternative to traditional game guides found through Google searches or YouTube tutorials. The tool can also display account information such as Game Pass subscription renewal dates and achievement progress when queried.
"We've learned a lot this past year, and appreciate all of the feedback that we've gotten from the community,"
Yadav added during her GDC presentation. The company plans continued expansion beyond consoles to additional services where players engage with games.
Sony appears to be developing similar technology according to a patent filed earlier this year describing an "AI-generated ghost player" capable of assisting stuck gamers through demonstration or direct control takeover. Microsoft itself holds patents for cloud-based assistance systems that could potentially evolve into future Gaming Copilot features.
Console integration marks Gaming Copilot's transition from limited beta testing to mainstream availability across Microsoft's primary gaming platform.
