Google is retiring the Google Assistant service, with the shutdown beginning on September 4 as Gemini assumes the assistant role. The transition could take a few weeks to reach all remaining users, and the shutdown will take effect on Android and Wear OS along with headphones that relied on the phone's assistant and vehicles running Android Auto.

The scope of the shutdown is tied directly to where the assistant actually ran. Headphones and Android Auto vehicles lose access because both were effectively using the Google Assistant on the connected phone.

The one notable exception is cars with Google built-in running Android Automotive, where the assistant will continue functioning beyond September 4.

Google Assistant also appears safe on Google TV and Google Home speakers and smart displays, at least for now. Google says it is committed to providing a smooth transition and is confident Gemini will offer a more capable and helpful assistant experience.

The September 4 cutoff marks the end of Google Assistant for mobile users, with Gemini now positioned as Google's assistant experience across the affected platforms.
