Google has responded to one of the biggest complaints about its Gemini for Home voice assistant by adding back a feature users took for granted with Google Assistant. The new Continued Conversation capability eliminates the need to repeat "Hey Google" during natural back-and-forth discussions.
Announced earlier today and rolling out to early access users first, the update keeps smart device microphones active for several seconds after Gemini provides its initial response. Device lights pulse or glow during this window, indicating users can ask follow-up questions without using the wake word again.
The feature directly addresses feedback from early adopters who found Gemini for Home less conversational than its predecessor. Unlike Google Assistant's free version of Continued Conversation, which worked across all devices, Gemini previously restricted extended conversations to paid subscribers through its Gemini Live service.
Users can now enable Continued Conversation globally across all supported languages and regions through Home Settings > Gemini for Home voice assistant > Continued Conversation in the mobile app. Once activated, it works for everyone in a household including guests.
Google says it refined how Gemini detects queries to make conversations feel more natural. The system better distinguishes between follow-up questions and side conversations with others in the room, reducing accidental activations while maintaining conversational context from previous exchanges.
The company positioned this as a top-requested feature from beta testers that makes interactions significantly more intuitive. For complex tasks like organizing to-do lists or meal planning, users can ask for a recipe then immediately follow up with requests like "Give me a different version" or "Add those ingredients to my shopping list."
While Gemini Live remains available exclusively to Google Home Premium subscribers at $10 per month, offering extended listening time per exchange, the free Continued Conversation feature provides basic multi-turn dialogue capability without subscription requirements.
Google has been preparing Gemini for Home as a replacement for the Google Assistant platform since last fall, with this update representing one of several recent improvements following user feedback about missing functionality.
