The European Commission is holding a special meeting today of its Scientific Panel on artificial intelligence (AI), which has been investigating recent incidents involving loss of control. The experts are due to deliver recommendations to the Commission addressing safety and security risks associated with frontier AI. Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, is scheduled to attend the meeting as the panel presents its recommendations on those risks.
The panel has also been working with the Commission’s AI Office on questions to put to the firms that built the models tied to those incidents, according to the announcement.
The Scientific Panel comprises 60 independent experts, whose advisory responsibilities cover both the EU AI Office and authorities operating at the national level. Their remit includes systemic risks and the classification of models, as well as methodologies for evaluating AI and surveillance of markets across national borders. Today’s special meeting is focused on the safety and security of frontier AI.
Virkkunen described the scientific advice as part of the EU’s approach to managing systemic AI risk, linking it to legislation and enforcement. Executive-Vice President Henna Virkkunen said: "The EU has the first law in the world that addresses systemic risk from AI, and we need state-of-the-art scientific input. AI capabilities are advancing rapidly, but with a strong legal framework, decisive enforcement and the best scientific minds supporting this work, Europe can lead in ensuring safe and secure AI."
