Smartphone brand loyalty reached new heights this year as Apple extended its lead over Android manufacturers, according to a nationwide survey of U.S consumers.

iPhone retention climbed to 96.4 percent among current owners planning their next upgrade, up from 91 percent in a similar study conducted five years ago. The figure represents steady growth since tracking began in 2019.

Android platform loyalty registered at 86 percent across all manufacturers surveyed earlier this month, creating a ten-point gap between operating systems.

The survey conducted by phone trade-in service SellCell polled more than five thousand American smartphone owners about their upgrade intentions and brand preferences. While overall Android retention trails Apple's ecosystem lock-in, individual manufacturers show stronger numbers within their customer bases.

Samsung leads Android brands with 90 percent retention among current device owners planning another Galaxy purchase.

Google's Pixel lineup follows closely behind at 87 percent according to the same data set.

The disparity becomes clearer when examining switching behavior rather than staying power. Android platform users are nearly four times more likely than their iOS counterparts to consider abandoning their current operating system for their next device purchase.

Specifically, 14 percent of surveyed Android owners indicated they might switch platforms compared to just under four percent of iPhone loyalists contemplating a move away from Apple hardware.

Among those potential defectors from iOS devices, Samsung stands as the primary beneficiary with 70 percent of switching interest directed toward Galaxy models.

Google captures another 20 percent of hypothetical iOS departures according to the survey methodology.

For Android-to-iPhone migration consideration, approximately 27 percent of platform switchers would select an Apple device over remaining with any Android manufacturer option.

Long-term usage patterns reveal even starker differences between platform ecosystems beyond immediate upgrade intentions.

Over 80 percent of current iPhone owners report using Apple smartphones for longer than five consecutive years according to survey responses collected earlier this month.

By comparison, only about one-third of surveyed Android device owners maintain similar multi-year commitments to any single manufacturer within the platform.
