When your HP Spectre x360 14 shows a "USB Device Not Recognized" error or simply doesn't power or detect a connected device, it's a frustrating roadblock. The issue could be with the port itself, the connected device, a driver conflict, or a power setting. Let's get it working again.

Restart Your Spectre

This is the simplest and often most effective step. A full restart reloads all the USB drivers and resets the USB controller, clearing out temporary glitches. Make sure you select "Restart" from the Start menu, not just close the lid to put it to sleep.

I've seen this fix a surprising number of one-off USB detection problems. It's a quick 30-second step that's always worth trying first.

Try a Different USB Port

Unplug your device and connect it to a different port on your Spectre x360 14. This model typically has both USB-C and USB-A ports. Try them all.

If your device works in another port, the original port might have a physical issue or be temporarily disabled by the system. This test instantly tells you if the problem is isolated to one specific connector.

Check Your Cable and Device

Faulty cables are a common culprit. Try a different USB cable, preferably one you know works for data transfer, not just charging. For devices like external drives, try connecting them to another computer.

If the device doesn't work on any other machine either, the problem is with the device itself. This simple elimination saves you from troubleshooting your laptop for an issue that lies elsewhere.

Update Drivers with HP Support Assistant

Open the HP Support Assistant app that came pre-installed on your Spectre. Run a check for updates. It will scan for the latest chipset, USB, and Thunderbolt drivers specifically for your exact model.

Installing drivers through HP's tool is more reliable than Windows Update for hardware-specific fixes. Let it install any available updates and then restart your laptop.

Use Device Manager to Refresh USB Drivers

Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager. Expand the section labeled Universal Serial Bus controllers. Look for any entries with a small yellow warning icon.

Right-click on the USB controller or the unrecognized device and choose Update driver. Select Search automatically for drivers. If that doesn't help, you can right-click and choose Uninstall device, then restart your laptop. Windows will automatically reinstall the driver on reboot.

Disable USB Selective Suspend

Windows can turn off USB ports to save battery, which sometimes prevents devices from being detected. To disable this, go to Control Panel > Power Options.

Click Change plan settings next to your selected plan, then Change advanced power settings. In the window, expand USB settings and then USB selective suspend setting. Set both "On battery" and "Plugged in" to Disabled.

Run the Hardware Troubleshooter

Windows has a built-in diagnostic for this. Press the Windows key, type "cmd", right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.

In the window, type the command msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic and press Enter. This launches the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter. Follow the prompts to let it scan for and attempt to fix USB-related problems.

Check for Windows Updates

Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates. Install all available updates, especially any optional driver updates.

Microsoft and HP often release system updates that include compatibility and stability fixes for hardware like USB controllers. Keeping your system fully updated resolves many underlying issues.

Scan for Hardware Changes in Device Manager

With Device Manager open (right-click Start > Device Manager), click on the Action menu at the top. Select Scan for hardware changes.

This forces Windows to immediately re-check all hardware buses, including USB, for newly connected devices. It can jolt the system into recognizing a device it previously missed.
