Trying to use Whisky on your Mac? The original app is no longer maintained, and fresh setup is blocked by a missing WhiskyWine runtime download. Here’s what that means for your options, how the independent community fork handles installation and migration, and what to do when macOS blocks the app.
Choose your route before downloading
If you’re starting from scratch, original Whisky’s setup hits a dead end. Its final release is 2.3.5, and its configured WhiskyWine runtime download returns a 404 error.
Start with the original product page to explore its Buy CrossOver option, or visit the independent frankea/Whisky community fork for its separate downloads and documentation.
For the community fork, use an Apple silicon Mac running macOS Sequoia 15 or later. The original app declared a minimum of macOS Sonoma 14 on Apple silicon and excluded Intel Macs. Those older requirements don’t apply to the fork.
Skip older tutorials that promise a fresh original-Whisky installation through its setup wizard. The vendor has ended WhiskyWine updates and game compatibility fixes, and downloading the archived app doesn’t restore its missing runtime.
Install the independent Whisky fork
On a compatible Mac, follow the maintainer’s installation steps for this separate community project; it is not an official Whisky-App update, and game compatibility is not guaranteed.
- 1.Open the frankea/Whisky product page.
- 2.Download the fork’s DMG.
- 3.Open the downloaded DMG.
- 4.Move Whisky.app to Applications.
Bring over existing bottles
Open the community fork to begin its documented migration process.
Choose File > Migrate from the Original Whisky.
Select the existing bottles you want to migrate.
Tip: Migration references your existing bottles in place, so nothing is moved or copied. That doesn’t guarantee compatibility with the programs inside them.
Clear a macOS opening warning
If macOS shows an unidentified-developer warning for a download you trust, first attempt to open the app.
Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security.
Click Open Anyway.
Click Open to confirm.
This addresses macOS’s opening restriction. It doesn’t supply original Whisky’s missing runtime or fix unsupported games.
If opening still fails on a managed Mac, contact your administrator about restrictions on these security settings. If the fork opens but setup fails, consult the fork maintainer’s documentation.
Check Steam support before installing
Newer Steam versions are unsupported by original Whisky, even when its runtime is already installed.
Choose an alternative to original Whisky for a new Windows Steam setup. Review CrossOver through the original project’s Buy CrossOver link, or consult the community fork’s documentation for its own setup route. Neither the referral nor the fork’s installation instructions guarantee compatibility with your game.
Use Valve’s official Steam download page to obtain the Windows installer for a Windows Steam setup. The native Mac Steam app is a separate client and doesn’t provide Whisky’s Windows environment.
Skip original Whisky’s historical Steam downgrade and update-freezing workaround. It restores a March 2025 client, does not provide support for current Steam, and carries a warning that Valve does not recommend it.
For Epic, GOG, or Amazon games, download the macOS build from Heroic’s official download page. Heroic’s current guidance discourages using original Whisky and declines support for that integration. Heroic lists Whisky only when a WhiskyWine runtime is already installed on your Mac, so selecting it can’t replace a missing runtime.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does installing original Whisky through Homebrew fix the missing runtime?
No. Homebrew marks the original Whisky cask as deprecated and still identifies version 2.3.5. Installing that cask does not resolve the missing WhiskyWine download.
Should I uninstall WhiskyWine and reinstall it to fix setup?
No. The original app’s automatic runtime download returns a 404 error. Removing an existing WhiskyWine installation leaves that automatic reinstall route blocked.
Why does original Whisky still have update controls?
Those controls remain in the final release. Their presence does not mean development continues; the vendor has ended WhiskyWine updates and app and game compatibility fixes.
Are Whisky’s application shortcuts Apple Shortcuts actions?
No. The original app’s Create Shortcut feature creates a macOS .app wrapper for a configured Windows program. It does not create an Apple Shortcuts action.
