Finding your HP printer’s firmware update menu gets confusing when the instructions don’t match its screen. Start with the HP app below, then choose the control-panel, browser, or computer method that fits your model and connection. Keep power connected throughout the update. Before installing, check your model’s release information because firmware can affect third-party cartridge compatibility.

Update through the HP app

The HP app checks for and installs firmware on compatible printers.

Select your printer in the HP app.

Open Advanced Settings, or use Printer Settings > View All > Advanced Settings if that matches your app layout.

Choose General > Firmware Update, Printer Update, or Tools > Printer Updates > Firmware Updates, depending on the menu shown.

Enter the PIN from the printer’s label when prompted.

Select Check for Update.

Select Update to install the available firmware.

Check from the printer’s control panel

Connect your compatible printer to the internet. A USB-only connection does not support control-panel update checks.

Open the update path shown on your printer: Menu > Tools > Maintenance > Firmware, Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer, or Setup > Tools > Update the printer > Check Now.

On a LaserJet Pro with a white-background touchscreen, swipe down to open Dashboard.

Navigate to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer > Check for Printer Updates Now.

For a LaserJet Pro with a black-background touchscreen, use Setup > Service > LaserJet Update > Check for Updates Now.

On a two-line LaserJet Pro display with physical buttons, press OK.

Use the arrow buttons to follow Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update Firmware > OK, or Setup > Service > LaserJet Update > Check for Update if that is the menu displayed.

Match the path to your printer’s controls, since HP uses different update labels across models.

If you prefer to use a browser

Use this route when your printer is accessible over the network and its Embedded Web Server, or EWS, offers the firmware menus below. You access these controls through the printer’s IP address.

Enter your printer’s IP address in the browser’s address bar.

Open General > Firmware Update, Printer Update, or Tools > Printer Updates > Firmware Updates, matching the layout displayed.

Enter the PIN from the printer’s label when requested.

Select Check for Update.

Choose Update to install an available update.

To change future update behavior on printers with editable preferences, open Firmware Update Settings on the EWS firmware page.

Select your preferred update setting.

Install the Windows firmware download

Use this route for a compatible USB or network printer with a firmware package available for your model and operating system.

  1. 1.Open HP’s printer software and driver downloads page on your computer.
  2. 2.Enter your printer’s serial number, product number, or product name. Select Submit, then choose the matching printer.
  3. 3.Find Firmware in the downloads and download your model’s package.
  4. 4.Run the downloaded package to open HP Printer Update.
  5. 5.Select the printer marked Ready and check the box beside its serial number. If your network printer is missing, temporarily connect it by USB, wait 20 seconds, and select Refresh before selecting it.
  6. 6.Select Update and let the installation finish with power connected.

The Mac updater for supported LaserJet Pro printers

For LaserJet Pro models with a compatible macOS updater, HP supports firmware installation over USB or a network connection. You need an installed print driver, and download availability depends on your model and operating system.

Download your model’s firmware .dmg from the Firmware category on HP’s printer software and driver downloads page.

Open the .dmg and launch HP Firmware Updater, followed by the extracted model-specific updater.

Select your printer, then choose Continue twice. Wait for the printer’s automatic restart before selecting Done. Verify the firmware version on a printer status or configuration report.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do older instructions tell me to use HP Smart?

HP is replacing the HP Smart app with the HP app on eligible devices. Once the replacement is available for your device, HP says HP Smart becomes obsolete and cannot be reinstalled. Use the replacement HP app where available.

Can my LaserJet Pro notify me before installing firmware?

On LaserJet Pro MFP 4301, 4302, and 4303 printers with editable preferences, open Menu > Settings > Printer Update > Allow Updates. Authenticate as administrator if requested. Scroll through the explanation, then choose Notify to approve available updates yourself.

Why are the automatic firmware update settings grayed out?

Active HP services can require automatic updates. For eligible printers, HP directs users to Web Services and removal of web services to unlock preferences. Other active services can still require automatic updates after that removal.

Do I need to change update preferences in my HP account too?

For accounts that expose the setting, sign in to the HP Smart website. Open Printers > Firmware Update Settings, then match the printer’s preference. The HP Smart website is separate from the HP Smart app being replaced by the HP app.
