Your Xbox app needs an update, but its settings screen sends you to release notes instead of installing anything. Microsoft Store handles Xbox app updates, including the manual check and automatic downloads. Start there, then work through the repair options below if the update refuses to install.

Update Xbox through Microsoft Store

An Xbox update waiting in Microsoft Store is the first thing to check when your app needs updating. Open Microsoft Store from Start. Select Downloads, the dedicated update page in the redesigned Store.

If your Store build has no Downloads page, use the older layout instead: Library > Get updates on Windows 11, or See more > Downloads and updates > Get updates on older Windows 10 Store builds. Choose Check for Updates. If Xbox appears in the queue with an Update button, select it to update the app individually.

Install any pending Gaming Services updates too, especially when troubleshooting installation or update problems. Let the available updates finish installing. Reopen Xbox.

Keep automatic app updates enabled

Search for Microsoft Store in Start. Then open Microsoft Store. Select Profile, your account photo, and open Store Settings.

Set App updates to On if your Store build displays that toggle. Check whether automatic updates are paused, since the settings presentation differs between Store builds.

Read the version screen without confusing it with an update check

Inside Xbox, open Profile picture > Settings > About. Your installed app version is labeled Internal.

The App Updates link opens Microsoft's Xbox app release notes. It does not install an update or check Microsoft Store for one.

Game-level controls such as Manage > Files > Check for updates update the selected game. To update the Xbox app itself, return to Microsoft Store > Downloads > Check for Updates.

Clear the cache if Microsoft Store will not open

When the Store will not open, clear its cache before trying the update again. This troubleshoots the Store; it does not directly update Xbox.

Press Windows logo key + R to open Run. Enter wsreset.exe, then select OK. Wait for the blank command window to close and Microsoft Store to open.

Retry the update through Downloads > Check for Updates. If the update still fails, try repairing Xbox next.

Repair an Xbox app that is acting up

A problem with the Xbox app itself is another reason to troubleshoot before retrying the Store update. On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Find Xbox, then open More (…) > Advanced options.

On Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Xbox > Advanced options instead. Select Repair if that option is available. If repairing does not resolve the problem, select Reset.

Retry Microsoft Store > Downloads > Check for Updates. Repair and reset address app problems; neither requests the newest version on its own.

Run the Gaming Services Repair Tool

This tool addresses installation and update problems involving Gaming Services and Xbox. Launch Xbox and select Profile picture. Open Support.

Select Gaming Services Repair Tool, then choose Start Troubleshooting. Complete the tool's prompts. Retry the Xbox update through Microsoft Store > Downloads > Check for Updates.

If Xbox cannot open, visit the official Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC page. Select Download the Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC. Save the downloaded file, then open the file to start its automatic check and installation of needed Gaming Services updates.

After it finishes, submit Y or N with Enter to report whether the issue was resolved. Retry the Xbox update through Microsoft Store > Downloads > Check for Updates.

Check Windows when installation problems persist

Use Windows Update when compatibility or installation problems persist. It addresses Windows prerequisites; the Xbox app still needs its own Store update check afterward.

On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Windows Update. Select Check for updates. On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update instead. Select Check for Updates.

Install the available applicable updates. Restart your PC when required. Retry the Xbox update through Microsoft Store > Downloads > Check for Updates.

Reinstall Xbox if normal updating still fails

On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Find Xbox. Open More (…), then select Uninstall.

On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Xbox instead. Select Uninstall and confirm removal. Visit the official Xbox PC app page.

Select DOWNLOAD THE APP. Run the downloaded installer and follow its installation prompts. Choose the current Xbox app, since Xbox Console Companion, Game Bar, and Xbox Accessories are separate apps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no Update button next to Xbox?

The Update button appears only when an applicable update is available. If Xbox has no update after you run Microsoft Store > Downloads > Check for Updates, there is no newer eligible version available through that check.

Can I update Xbox from an error message inside the app?

Yes. If a purchase, redemption, or activation error displays Update to the latest version, select that link, then select Get updates. This is a contextual link in the error message, not a permanent Xbox settings command.

Does the Xbox app still support Windows 10?

The official Xbox PC app page lists Windows 10 and Windows 11, version 22H2 or higher. Standard Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025.

Can I reinstall Xbox through Microsoft Store instead of downloading an installer?

Yes. After uninstalling Xbox, reinstall it from the official Microsoft Store listing for product ID 9MV0B5HZVK9Z. If Xbox appears in your Store library, open Microsoft Store > Library, find Xbox, and select Install.
