An MSI display problem can show up as a monitor with no signal, a laptop that stays black after sleep, a flickering screen, or colors that suddenly look wrong. Common causes are power, a loose or wrong connection, a stuck graphics driver, and a setting that changed without you noticing. Start with the physical checks below, then move through the Windows, driver and firmware fixes in order.

Check power, cables and input on an MSI monitor

If your MSI monitor stays dark, press its power button and wake the computer. Reseat the power cord and the original MSI adapter, including any detachable connections. Then try a working outlet or a compatible replacement power cable.

Reconnect the video cable at both ends. Open the monitor's on-screen menu, go to Input Source, and pick the port the cable is plugged into. If nothing changes, swap in another cable.

For USB-C, the computer's port and the cable must both support video through DisplayPort Alternate Mode or Thunderbolt, and Thunderbolt needs a certified cable. Remove any dock or adapter and test a direct USB-C connection.

Finally, plug a different computer or compatible device into the monitor. If that gives you a picture, the fault lies with the original source device or its settings.

Wake an MSI laptop stuck on a black screen

On an MSI laptop that shows nothing at all, power and the laptop's Embedded Controller are the first things to rule out.

Charge the laptop with the original MSI AC adapter for at least 30 minutes. Unplug every peripheral. If you recently swapped RAM or an SSD, put the factory parts back to test the original configuration.

Then reset the Embedded Controller. Shut the laptop down, disconnect AC power, and hold the Power button for 30 seconds. Reconnect AC and turn the laptop on.

Recover a blank screen after Windows loads

This fixes a black or blank screen caused by a hung graphics driver or a stalled Windows shell.

Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B. A beep or brief flicker means Windows received the graphics driver reset, and MSI recommends it for black screens after Modern Standby.

If you see a cursor on an empty desktop, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, or with Ctrl+Alt+Delete if the security screen appears.

Find Windows Explorer in the list, right-click it, and choose Restart.

If the screen stays blank, force a shutdown by holding the power button for 10 seconds, and repeat this two or three times until Windows enters recovery.

In recovery, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.

Press F5 to start Safe Mode with networking, then repair the graphics driver there.

If the problem started after a recent change, go instead to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > System Restore and pick a restore point from before the display problem.

Bring back a missing or misarranged second display

On a Windows MSI notebook, press Windows+P and choose PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend or Second screen only. MSI also documents Fn+F2 on notebooks that have that display-switch key.

For a screen Windows can't see, open Settings > System > Display, expand Multiple displays, and select Detect. Use Identify to see which screen is which, drag the display rectangles into the right arrangement, and select Apply.

On the same page, select the affected display to adjust Scale & layout, Display resolution and Display orientation, then confirm Keep changes. For refresh problems, open Advanced display, select the monitor, and use Choose a refresh rate; the rates offered depend on the display and connection. If a game is capped below your monitor's maximum, turn Dynamic refresh rate off there, as Microsoft recommends.

For a compatible wireless display adapter, press Windows+K and select it. If windows jump around when you dock or undock, review Remember window locations based on monitor connection and Minimize windows when a monitor is disconnected under Multiple displays.

Guides that send you to Advanced display settings > Refresh rate describe the old Windows 10 layout, so use the Windows 11 labels above.

If Windows still can't find the screen, go back to the cable and Input Source checks, then test the monitor with another device.

Stop screen flicker with driver and app fixes

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc while the screen flickers. If Task Manager flickers too, the graphics driver is the suspect; if it stays steady while other content flickers, look at your apps.

For the driver, open Device Manager > Display adapters, right-click the GPU, and choose Update driver, or use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver > Yes and restart, which needs a previous driver and administrator rights. On MSI notebooks with flicker after a driver update, MSI's fix is Uninstall device, then the graphics package for your exact model and OS from MSI's Downloads > driver page. Windows can also offer drivers under Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates > Download and install.

When only one program flickers, update it and test with hardware acceleration off; in Firefox, open Settings, find Performance, clear Use recommended performance settings, turn off hardware acceleration and restart Firefox. If a managed Firefox has that setting locked, ask your administrator. As a last step, remove the app through Settings > Apps > Installed Apps > Uninstall, restart, and retest before removing another.

On supported MSI high-refresh laptops, a brief black screen when you plug in or unplug the charger comes from Display Power Saver. Turn it off in MSI Center under Features > General Settings, or in MSI Center S under Settings > General Settings.

Fix washed-out, warm or gray colors

Use these fixes when the picture works but looks wrong: too warm, gray, dim, badly balanced in HDR, or washed out.

If the image looks warm, open Settings > System > Display > Night light and check its strength and schedule, or switch it off to compare.

For grayscale or altered colors, go to Settings > Accessibility > Color filters and turn the filter off. Windows+Ctrl+C toggles filters when that shortcut is enabled, and Windows+Esc closes Magnifier if the desktop looks enlarged.

If brightness changes on its own on a laptop screen, set Change brightness based on content to Off under Settings > System > Display > Brightness. External monitors generally use their own brightness controls.

For wrong color profiles, open Color profile on the Display page, select the screen, and use Add profile, Remove, Set profile or Calibrate display.

With HDR, select the display, open HDR, and adjust SDR content brightness or HDR content brightness, restarting apps that don't reflect the change. For HDR color fringes, Microsoft suggests DisplayPort instead of HDMI when supported, a lower refresh rate in Advanced display, or a supported lower-resolution mode from Display adapter properties > Adapter > List All Modes.

On MSI notebooks that offer True Color, washed-out colors call for a clean reinstall. Download the model's graphics and True Color packages first, disconnect from the network, keep AC connected, and uninstall True Color from Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall or change a program. Reinstall the graphics packages, then run Install.exe from the extracted True Color download and restart.

Green YouTube video with working audio is a separate case. Play it in another browser and update your computer maker's graphics driver.

Get a picture from a desktop PC with no signal

On a desktop with a dedicated graphics card, connect the monitor to that card, because some motherboards disable their own video outputs when a dedicated card is installed.

If the cable is already on the card, shut down, unplug the PC, and make sure the card is fully seated, its bracket is secured and its power connectors are attached. Disconnect external devices one at a time and restart, and undo any recent RAM or SSD upgrade.

MSI also documents two power resets. Disconnect power and press Power 20 times, or disconnect power and remove the CMOS battery for five minutes before reinstalling it, following your model's service instructions. On MSI motherboards you can also clear CMOS with the JBAT1 jumper after fully disconnecting power, and check that the case power switch connects to JFP1.

On MSI motherboards with an EZ Debug LED, note which light stays on during startup and match it to the manual to find the failing stage. If your CPU has integrated graphics, remove the dedicated card and test the motherboard video output. For deeper isolation, keep only the CPU, cooler, one RAM module, power supply and a usable graphics output, then reconnect removed devices one at a time after a successful POST.

Recognize OLED features that look like faults

On MSI OLED models such as the MAG 272UP QD-OLED E16, check these protective behaviors first.

  1. 1.If brightness and contrast are unavailable, check whether the source is sending HDR, which disables several SDR picture controls, and test in SDR.
  2. 2.If the screen dims on a still image, Static Screen Detection under MSI OLED Care is working, and it reverses when moving content appears.
  3. 3.If a maintenance notice appears, let Panel Protect finish without unplugging the monitor.
  4. 4.On monitors equipped with MSI's AI Care Sensor, such as the MPG 271QR QD-OLED X50, if the screen dims or sleeps when you step away, review the sensor's mode: System Mode uses Windows presence sensing, while Monitor Mode uses the monitor's menu.
  5. 5.If you see flicker with variable refresh, open Gaming Features > OLED Anti-Flicker PRO and pick a level, with Adaptive-Sync enabled.

Reset, update or restore as a last resort

If the monitor's on-screen menu still opens, reset it with Setting > Reset > Yes. On the MAG 272UP QD-OLED E16, press the Navi Key and choose General > Reset All > YES. For Gaming Intelligence to control the monitor, connect the USB upstream cable along with video, and reinstall the latest package if the app can't detect the display.

MEG and MPG QD-OLED monitors, plus the MAG 341CQP, take firmware through Gaming Intelligence's Firmware Update option. Other MAG QD-OLED models use the model's own FW Update Utility and installation guide. Early MAG 321UPX QD-OLED and MAG 271QPX QD-OLED units first need an upgrade at an MSI service center before they can take firmware updates, so check the firmware version in the menu and contact MSI if yours is an early unit. Afterward, reset the menu and disconnect and reconnect monitor power.

On MSI notebooks, press Delete repeatedly at the MSI logo and choose Save & Exit > Load Optimized Defaults. A visible boot-device error is not a display fault, so check Storage Information in the BIOS instead. For firmware updates, look under Optional updates for Micro-Star International Firmware and restart with AC connected.

F3 recovery returns the laptop to its factory state and erases your data, so back up and connect AC first. It only works if MSI's factory recovery partition is intact; if Windows was reinstalled or the disk was repartitioned, contact an MSI service center instead. Press F3 repeatedly at the MSI logo, then choose Troubleshoot > Restore MSI factory settings > Skip this drive > System Partition Recovery.

If none of this brings the display back, open MSI's support site and select Learn More for hotline or live chat, or How to send my product for repair service? to start a repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my MSI laptop screen flash black when I unplug the charger?

On supported high-refresh MSI laptops, Display Power Saver changes the refresh rate automatically when AC power is connected or disconnected, which causes a brief black screen. You can turn it off in MSI Center or MSI Center S, but that can shorten battery life.

Where do I get the right drivers and firmware for my MSI device?

Use MSI's official download page. Search for your exact product name or use Find your Product, then choose the correct model and operating system rather than a similarly named product.

Can I make my regular MSI monitor wireless?

No. Windows+K connects to a compatible wireless display adapter, but that doesn't make an ordinary MSI monitor wireless.

Is Gaming OSD the same as Gaming Intelligence?

Yes. Gaming OSD is the former name of MSI's monitor software. Look for Gaming Intelligence on your monitor's official utility page and install only the version offered for that exact model.
