Your Nighthawk’s WiFi has disappeared, your devices connect without internet, or the app cannot find the router. Start with power and a network restart, then use the checks below to isolate the failure and fix the settings that match it. These steps cover Nighthawk home routers; mobile hotspots have different setup and recovery procedures.
Start with power and a full network restart
This checks the power supply and restarts the connection between your modem, router, and devices.
Reseat the power connector at the router. Then reseat the adapter at the outlet. Test a working outlet using the NETGEAR power adapter supplied for your model.
Shut down your connected devices. Switch off the router. Turn off the modem completely. If its backup battery keeps it running, remove the battery.
Wait two minutes. Power on the modem. Wait approximately five minutes, or until the modem establishes its ISP connection.
Turn on the router. Skip this separate stage if you have a combined modem-router. Start your connected devices again.
Check your model’s manual if the Power light keeps blinking. Persistent blinking has model-specific meanings, including damaged firmware.
On an RS700/RS700S, check the LED On/Off button before treating dark indicators as a failure. This button switches off every indicator except Power.
Find out whether the failure is WiFi or internet service
Check that the Ethernet cable from your external modem connects to the Nighthawk’s Internet port. Turn off WiFi on a computer to keep the test on a wired connection. Then connect that computer to the router by Ethernet.
Test internet access. If it works, continue to the WiFi checks below. If internet access fails through the router, test the computer directly at the modem using your ISP’s connection requirements.
Contact your ISP if the direct-modem connection also fails. For a Nighthawk cable modem-router, ask the ISP to confirm activation and provisioning. Check the coaxial connection for a loose attachment. Remove unnecessary coaxial splitters.
Keep your wired-test results handy when contacting support, because they help distinguish a router failure from an ISP or modem problem.
Open the router’s local settings
Connect to the Nighthawk’s network, then open routerlogin.net or routerlogin.com in a browser. Sign in with admin and the administrator password established during setup. This password is separate from your WiFi and MyNETGEAR passwords.
If neither address opens, enter the router’s actual LAN IP address; common defaults are 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1, but neither is universal. Try another browser or clear its cache. Disconnect competing VPN or network connections if access remains blocked.
Test access over Ethernet, another WiFi band, or another device. Use your exact model’s manual when menu names differ from those below. For a forgotten administrator password on a router with security-question recovery, enter incorrect credentials three times at routerlogin.net to display Router Password Reset.
Enter the serial number and select CONTINUE. Answer the security questions and select CONTINUE again. Choose a new administrator password and security questions, then select NEXT.
Restore missing or unreliable WiFi
Use these checks when Ethernet works but wireless devices cannot connect, or when your WiFi network disappears. Buttons and wireless settings differ by model.
On a router equipped with WiFi On/Off, hold that button for two seconds. Check the label carefully: WPS, LED On/Off, and Reset perform different functions.
For supported R, RAX, RAXE, and XR models, connect a computer by Ethernet to reach the wireless controls. Open ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Wireless settings. Select Enable Wireless Router Radio for each required band. Radios disabled on this page cannot be re-enabled with the physical WiFi button.
Select Apply. If WiFi disappears at predictable times, inspect ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Wireless Settings on a model that supports wireless schedules. Clear Turn off wireless signal by schedule if the shutdown is unintended. Select Apply.
To correct the network name or password, open Wireless. On Pro Gaming routers, use Settings > Wireless Setup. Edit Name (SSID) to set the intended network name. Edit Password (Network Key) to set the intended password.
Select Apply. Reconnect your devices using the resulting credentials. Test an unreliable connection close to the router.
The usable range of 6 GHz is shorter than 5 GHz, and both the router and device must support 6 GHz to use it. Move the router out of a closet, basement, or obstructed location.
If only one device lacks internet, open Nighthawk > Device Manager to check for a Smart Parental Controls pause. Swipe right on the affected device. Tap the play icon to resume access.
For a device blocked by router access control, open ADVANCED > Security > Access Control. Select the affected device. Choose Allow. Select Apply.
Reconnect the Nighthawk app to your router
A phone connected to the wrong WiFi network is a cause of the app’s Router Not Found error. Open your phone’s Settings > WiFi. Join the router’s default network or the new network you created during setup. Return to Nighthawk.
Tap Try Again. Temporarily disable cellular data if the phone keeps leaving WiFi during installation. Switch off the old router or access point during setup if your phone keeps joining it. Duplicate network names interfere with selecting the intended router.
On an iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network. Enable Nighthawk. The app appears here after it has requested permission. If installation still fails in the app, join the WiFi network listed on the router’s label.
Open http://routerlogin.net. Complete the setup instructions displayed in the browser. Use the browser interface for a router running in access point mode if its model does not support app management in that mode. NETGEAR identifies this limitation on some models even when the network itself works.
Check the router’s internet connection settings
This addresses a router that works locally but has no working internet connection. Sign in at routerlogin.net with the router administrator credentials. Open Administration > Router Status on models with that interface.
Inspect the Internet-port address. A value of 0.0.0.0 means the router has not obtained an address from the ISP. For a DHCP connection on a router with the connection-status screen, open ADVANCED. The following release-and-renew procedure does not apply universally to PPPoE connections.
Select Connection Status in Internet Port. Select Release. Select Renew. During app installation, tap Advanced Setup on the Internet not connected screen if your ISP requires a specific connection type.
Choose the ISP-required connection type on Advanced Network Setup. Use browser setup for L2TP/PPTP connections, as NETGEAR specifies. Enter the static-IP details or PPPoE credentials supplied by your ISP for the selected connection type. To correct DNS on a router with the Internet Setup page, open Internet > Domain Name Server (DNS) Address.
Select Get Automatically from ISP for automatic DNS, or Use These DNS Servers if your ISP requires specific addresses. If you selected Use These DNS Servers, enter the ISP-required addresses. Select Apply. Select Test.
Ask your ISP to register the replacement router if its service restricts which MAC address connects.
Update firmware and address repeated restarts
For repeated spontaneous reboots, NETGEAR recommends a firmware update, another outlet, and the supplied power adapter. Its troubleshooting also includes a UPS for power interruptions.
To update through the app, connect your phone to the router’s WiFi. Open Nighthawk. Sign in as prompted. Tap the router image.
Select CHECK FOR UPDATES. Tap UPDATE when an update is offered. Keep the router powered throughout. For a browser update, sign in at routerlogin.net.
Open ADVANCED > Administration, or Settings > Administration on the applicable interface. Select Firmware Update or Router Update. Select Check. Choose Yes or Upgrade when offered.
Allow the restart to finish. Where the ISP controls cable-modem firmware, use its update process for that component. If updates and power checks fail, try your model’s factory-reset procedure below. For a router that cannot finish booting, use NETGEAR’s model-specific firmware-recovery support.
Save a factory reset for the last step
Find your exact model and hardware revision in NETGEAR’s Download Center to obtain its manual and firmware. Check the manual’s reset procedure before pressing a button. A factory reset erases configuration; an ordinary reboot preserves it.
On an RS700/RS700S with accessible settings, open ADVANCED > Administration > Backup Settings. Select Back Up. Save the generated .cfg file. With the router powered on, hold the recessed Reset or Restore Factory Settings button for the time specified in its manual.
NETGEAR’s generic procedure specifies seven seconds for covered models. For the RS700/RS700S, the manual’s reset procedure says to hold the button for at least ten seconds, while its hardware section says the reset starts after five seconds, when the Power light turns from solid amber to blinking amber. Holding for ten seconds satisfies both descriptions.
Release the button. Allow the restart to finish. The RS700/RS700S procedure allows approximately two minutes. Complete router setup again.
Reconnect your devices to the configured WiFi network. Contact NETGEAR support if power checks, reset, and applicable recovery do not restore operation.
Provide the exact model, hardware revision, firmware version, LED behavior, and results of your Ethernet and direct-modem tests. Keep the model manual handy, because reset timing and recovery procedures differ across Nighthawk models.
