The Easiest Way: Set Up Nearby Device

When you first boot up the Pixel 10a, you will hit a screen asking if you want to copy apps and data. Hit Next. Grab your old phone, open the Google app or go to Settings > Google > Set up & restore > Set up nearby device, and tap it. The Pixel 10a will generate a QR code or use a direct Wi-Fi connection to start pulling everything over.

This method handles apps, contacts, messages, and system settings. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes for a full transfer over a decent Wi-Fi connection.

Faster and More Reliable: Cable Transfer

If you want speed and stability, connect both phones directly with a USB-C cable. The Pixel 10a ships with a USB-C cable in the box. The setup wizard will detect the connection automatically and walk you through selecting exactly what to move: photos, contacts, messages, even your wallpaper and home screen layout. This method bypasses Wi-Fi entirely and is generally the most stable option available.

If the transfer keeps failing or stalling out, try a different USB-C cable. Faulty or non-compliant cables are a common cause of transfer interruptions.

Restoring From Google Backup

You can also just sign into your Google account during setup and choose Restore from backup. This pulls your app list, settings, wallpapers, and Wi-Fi passwords from the cloud. The Pixel 10a will download everything in the background while you poke around the home screen.

Make sure your old phone was being backed up recently. Check Settings > System > Backup on the old device to see the last backup date. If it is missing, do the backup manually before setting up the new phone.

Switching From an iPhone

Coming from an iPhone? The Pixel 10a handles this natively in the setup wizard. Select iPhone or iPad when asked where your data is coming from. You can connect with a cable or by scanning a QR code on the screen. Contacts, calendar events, and photos will migrate over. Your iMessages and iCloud Keychain passwords will not, so save those manually or check them off one by one.

Download your iOS apps on the Play Store as you go. Most popular apps are on both platforms.

Keep the Pixel 10a Charged During Transfer

Large data transfers eat through battery life faster than you might expect. Plug your Pixel 10a into a power source before you start the copy process. The 45W USB-C PPS charger gets it back up to full in a hurry. If the USB-C port seems finicky or the transfer keeps dropping, throw the phone on a Qi wireless charger for a maintenance top up. A dead phone mid-transfer is a real pain to recover from.

App Logins and Two-Factor Codes

Don't forget to bring over your two-factor authenticator apps. Google Authenticator has a built-in transfer tool now, but you have to initiate it manually on both devices. After the transfer finishes, sign into your critical apps first: banking, email, and social media. Everything else can wait.

WhatsApp users need to open the app on the old phone and go to Settings > Chats > Transfer chats to move the history over to the Pixel 10a.

Wiping Your Old Phone for Trade-In

Once you have verified the Pixel 10a has everything you need, it is time to wipe the old device. Go to Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset). This clears off your apps and data for good. Make sure you have signed out of your Google account and disabled Factory Reset Protection before handing it over for a trade-in or resale.
