Facebook does not send an alert when someone unfriends you, and there is no setting that turns those notifications on. The answer comes from checking your friendship status and ruling out lookalikes such as blocking, deactivation, deletion, or limited visibility.

Start with the person’s profile, then confirm it from your own Friends list. If the profile has disappeared, treat that as an unavailable profile first, not proof of unfriending.

Check the profile first

Tap or click Search, enter the person’s name, and open their profile. If you are still friends, the relationship button shows Friends. If the profile shows Add Friend or Follow, you are not currently Facebook friends.

That result still needs context. Blocking, deactivation, account deletion, privacy, and search visibility can change what appears on the profile.

Search your Friends list

Your own Friends list is the cleanest account-side check. On mobile, tap Menu, tap your name, scroll to the friends section, tap See all friends, then search or scroll for the person.

On desktop, open your profile, open Friends, then search or scroll for their name. If they are missing, you are no longer friends, but that alone does not prove they chose to unfriend you.

If this method fails because the result is unclear, check the person’s profile again, then rule out blocking, deactivation, deletion, and your own past removals.

Open the Friendship page

This fixes uncertainty when the profile still opens but the relationship status is unclear. Go to the person’s profile by typing their name into the search bar at the top of Facebook. Then tap Options below the cover photo and select See Friendship.

If See Friendship is unavailable, or the page no longer shows a friendship context, take it as a sign that you may not currently be friends. Confirm it with your Friends list when the profile is unavailable or the interface differs by platform.

Rule out a missing profile

The most common cause of confusion is a profile that no longer appears in search. Search for the person by name before deciding what happened. If you cannot find them, blocking and other visibility or search issues can be involved.

Deactivated profiles do not appear in search or on timeline surfaces. A deleted account, a block, or limited visibility can look the same from your side, so a missing profile is not proof that someone unfriended you.

Review your Activity Log

Tap Menu, then tap your name. Tap Options, then tap Activity Log.

Tap View Activity History. Review Logged actions and other activity and connections-related entries for added and removed friends. If your Activity Log shows that you removed the person, they did not unfriend you. Use this check before assuming the other person ended the connection.

Compare your Facebook export

This fixes cases where you need a broader before-and-after check instead of searching one name. Tap Menu, scroll down and tap Settings & privacy, then tap Settings.

Tap Meta Account. If your account has not been updated yet, tap Accounts Center instead; Meta is still rolling Meta Account out account by account, and it is not available everywhere. Then tap Your information and permissions and tap Export your information.

Export your Facebook profile’s information, including friends or followers categories when offered. Compare an older export with a newer export. A missing person shows a lost connection, but it does not tell you whether the cause was unfriending, deactivation, deletion, blocking, Facebook enforcement, or your own removal.

Use an older list or a mutual friend

An old saved Friends list, screenshot, contact export, or previous Facebook data download can work as a baseline. Open your current Friends list from your profile, compare it with the older list, then investigate missing names by opening or searching each profile.

A trusted mutual friend can help separate unfriending from a hidden or unavailable profile. Ask them to search the person’s name and open the profile; if they can see it but you cannot, blocking is possible.

If this method fails because privacy settings limit what either of you can see, use your own Activity Log and current Friends list for the most direct checks.

Skip unfriender apps

Older guides often recommend apps or extensions that save a copy of your friend list and compare it later. These tools are not Facebook-supported unfriend detectors. Facebook does not provide an official unfriend-tracking notification or a complete friend-list API for ordinary consumer trackers.

They usually cannot tell who unfriended you before installation. Use Facebook’s profile status, Friends list, Activity Log, and your own exports instead. Avoid giving broad account access to a tool that Facebook does not support for this job.

Confirm it fast

Use this quick sequence when you only care about one person:

  1. 1.Search their name with Search and open the profile.
  2. 2.Look for Friends, Add Friend, or Follow on the profile.
  3. 3.Open your profile’s Friends list and search their name.
  4. 4.Check Activity Log to see whether you removed them yourself.
  5. 5.If the profile is missing, rule out blocking, deactivation, deletion, and visibility before assuming they unfriended you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Facebook notify you when someone unfriends you?

No. Facebook does not provide an unfriend alert, and there is no current Facebook setting for enabling unfriended notifications.

Does Add Friend mean someone unfriended me?

It means you are not currently Facebook friends. It does not prove why the connection ended, because blocking, deactivation, deletion, privacy, search visibility, or your own removal can affect what you see.

Can I see who unfriended me in Activity Log?

Activity Log is best for checking your own actions. If it shows that you removed the person, they did not unfriend you. It does not give a direct notice that someone else removed you.

Can a third-party app show who unfriended me on Facebook?

Facebook does not support a complete official unfriend detector through notifications or API access. Third-party tools may rely on saved snapshots or broad account access and usually cannot show unfriends from before they were installed.
