A missing Bridge or an unreachable bulb can bring your Philips Hue setup to a standstill. Start with the setup steps for your hardware, then tackle the connection that's failing. You'll find separate instructions for the standard Bridge, Bridge Pro, Bluetooth lights, and direct Matter pairing below.

Start with the Hue app and your Bridge

Open the official Philips Hue apps page and select Explore the Hue app. Install Philips Hue from the linked Apple App Store or Google Play listing. This is the main app for both Bridge and Bluetooth setups.

For the square standard Hue Bridge, connect power and an Ethernet cable to your router. The standard model needs Ethernet; Bridge Pro also supports Wi-Fi.

Connect your phone to that router's Wi-Fi. The standard Bridge's first two indicators must be lit before you continue.

Open Hue and select Yes when asked to add a Bridge. Already using the app? Open Settings > Devices > +. Scan the Bridge's QR code.

Select Next, or use No QR code to search for hardware without a code. Press the round button on top of the Bridge when the app requests authorization. Complete the remaining setup prompts, including adding starter-kit lights.

Use the main Hue app for Bluetooth lights and HDMI sync-box setup. The separate Hue Sync mobile app is retired. The original round Bridge v1 has also lost cloud support, and its dedicated app is retired, so current cloud integrations require supported Bridge hardware.

If Hue still cannot find or authorize your standard Bridge, check the Ethernet connection and your phone's network next.

Get an undiscovered Bridge onto the right network

A phone on a different network or a loose Ethernet connection blocks Bridge discovery. Connect your phone to the Wi-Fi network of the router your Bridge uses. Reseat both ends of the Ethernet cable.

Connect the Bridge directly to a LAN port on your primary router during troubleshooting. These cable checks also apply to an Ethernet-connected Bridge Pro.

Disconnect power from the router and Bridge for 30 seconds. Reconnect power to both devices, then retry Bridge setup in Hue.

Temporarily disconnect any VPN or network filter that blocks local-device access. Hue requires the VPN to be disconnected during initial setup when authorization uses the Bridge's physical button. Try Bridge discovery again.

Restore discovery permissions and try an IP address

Bridge connected but still missing? Check phone permissions, then try its IP address.

On iPhone or iPad, open system Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network. Enable Philips Hue if listed. Select Allow when Hue requests local-network access.

On Pixel, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Philips Hue > Permissions. Allow Nearby devices if requested. Permit Camera access while using the app for QR scanning. Other Android manufacturers use different permission paths.

Retry standard Bridge discovery through Yes > Search in its setup flow. If it fails, select I need help > More options for IP-based search.

Sign into your router's browser settings portal. In its connected-device list, match the MAC address printed on your Bridge and read the associated IP address. Router menu labels vary. Enter that IP address in Hue's IP-based search to find the Bridge.

Connect Bridge Pro over Wi-Fi or Ethernet

Keep the Bridge Pro QR code accessible before powering the unit. Choose Yes during first-run Bridge setup, or open Settings > Devices > + in an existing installation.

Scan the QR code, then select Next. Choose Wi-Fi for wireless setup, leaving Ethernet disconnected. Choose Ethernet for a wired installation.

Connect the supplied USB-C power cable. Complete the app's setup prompts. If scanning is unavailable, select I need help > No QR code > Bridge pro to begin guided setup without the code.

Check the connectivity indicator if setup stalls. Pulsing red means Wi-Fi failure, pulsing amber means an IP-address problem, and solid white means the unit is online. Review your router's Wi-Fi settings, particularly after changing internet providers.

For a persistent red or yellow indication, open Hue Support and select Contact us.

Tip: Use these indicator meanings for Bridge Pro; the standard Bridge has different indicators.

Add lights with a Bridge or Bluetooth

With your Bridge connected, open Home > … > Add devices. Choose a Room, then scan the lights' QR codes. Select Next.

Install and power the lights when prompted. Select Next, then name your lights.

No QR code on the product? Open Settings > Devices > +. Select No QR code to search for the light or enter its serial number.

For setup without a Bridge, check that the light supports Bluetooth. Enable Bluetooth on your phone. Add each Bluetooth light individually through Settings > Devices > +, using its QR code or the No QR code search and serial-number options. If a light still won't connect, check its power and range next, then try serial-number recovery before a reset.

Bring unreachable lights back within range

Restore power to the affected light at its wall switch. For Bluetooth control, move your phone within approximately 30 feet of the light. Hue gives this as a range guideline, not a guarantee.

For Bridge control, position a powered Hue light within approximately 32 feet of the Bridge. Position additional lights within approximately 32 feet of one another. These are also Hue's range guidelines.

Open Settings > Software update in Hue. Install available updates, repeating the update process if prompted. Keep lights powered and reachable during updates. Distribution to all lights can take hours.

Enable automatic updates on the Software update screen. For interference between the Bridge and its Zigbee lights, open Settings > Bridge settings > Zigbee channel > Change channel. Hue also uses the labels Bridges, Hue Bridges, and My Hue system for Bridge navigation; the entry name isn't universal.

Complete the channel-change prompts. This adjustment applies to Zigbee connections, not Bluetooth or direct Thread connections.

Tip: For an unreachable switch or sensor, open its settings or edit screen and follow the built-in reconnection instructions.

Recover a stubborn bulb before resetting the Bridge

Start with serial-number recovery, then choose one reset method that matches your hardware.

  1. 1.Open Settings > Devices > + > No QR code and use serial-number entry. If your app shows the Lights menu, use Settings > Lights > + > Use serial number; enter the six-character code, select +, then Search. Successful recovery flashes the light.
  2. 2.To reset with a Hue dimmer switch, power-cycle the light. Within 30 minutes, hold the dimmer nearby and press its top and bottom buttons together for at least 10 seconds. These are On and Off, or Power and Hue, depending on the model. Release after the light flashes.
  3. 3.To reset with a Tap dial switch instead, power-cycle the light. Within 30 minutes, hold the switch nearby and hold its rear Setup button for at least 10 seconds. Release after the light flashes.
  4. 4.For a bulb bearing the Bluetooth logo, another reset option is five on-and-off power cycles. Leave it on for 5–10 seconds before each switch-off. The bulb blinks to acknowledge the factory reset. Use this method only for Bluetooth-logo bulbs.
  5. 5.Re-add the reset light through Settings > Devices > +. Reserve a standard Bridge factory reset for instructions from Hue support: it erases configuration, and lights can require serial-number recovery afterward. For persistent faults, open Hue Support and select Contact us.

Restore remote control and voice-assistant connections

A missing Hue account sign-in prevents Bridge-based out-of-home control. Check the Hue service-status page for account, cloud, or connected-service problems before resetting hardware or relinking an integration. Confirm that the Bridge is powered and connected.

Open Settings > Account in Hue to sign in or create an account. Bluetooth-only control doesn't provide this remote-control route. Select Forgot password to recover a Hue account. Check your spam folder if the recovery email doesn't arrive.

Check the spelling of your email address. For accounts using Apple or Google sign-in, recover your credentials through that provider.

To link Alexa, open Settings > Smart Home > Get Started > Amazon Alexa and complete the linking prompts. For missing lights in an existing Alexa integration, say “Alexa, sync my devices.” Hue's current Alexa setup page gives “Alexa, discover devices” for the same refresh, so try that phrasing if the first command doesn't take.

Connect Google Home through Settings > Smart home > Google Assistant. For an unresponsive Bluetooth light linked to Google Home, power-cycle the light. Allow up to one minute for it to reconnect.

Pair Apple Home through Settings > Smart home > Apple Home. Hue's current Apple Home setup page labels that entry Smart home & voice and routes through Get started > Siri & Apple Home > Set up, so follow whichever label your app shows. Bridge Pro uses Matter for Apple Home; native HomeKit pairing remains supported on the HomeKit-capable standard Bridge v2.

If an integration is missing lights after combining Bridges, open Settings > SmartHome in Hue. Select the partner, then select Unlink. Unlink Hue in the partner app too if that partner requires it.

Add Philips Hue again in the partner app. Rebuild any routines affected by the relinking.

Pair Matter-enabled lights directly with another platform

Direct Matter pairing applies only to Hue lights explicitly marked with the Matter logo. A Thread connection requires a compatible Thread border router.

Remove the light's existing Bridge association before pairing it directly with another platform. Start the add-device flow in Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa. Scan the Matter QR code from the installation guide, or enter the 11-digit pairing code.

Power the light. Complete pairing in the platform's app.

If discovery or control fails, check that the light has power. Connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi network as the Matter controller. Restart the light, then retry the connection in the platform's app.

Update the light's firmware if the problem continues. Update the apps used to control it. If the QR code is missing, enter the manual pairing code printed on the bulb.

To share an already paired light with another ecosystem, generate a new Matter setup code in the app where you originally paired it. Sharing labels depend on that platform. Use the new code in the additional platform's add-device flow.
