Netgear AC1900 router setup gets confusing when the instructions don't match the model on your desk. AC1900 is a wireless speed class, not a model number, and standalone routers and cable modem routers need different installation steps. Start with the matching setup below, then set your passwords and tackle any missing WiFi or internet connection.

Start with your model and the Nighthawk app

Nighthawk provides guided internet and wireless setup on Android and iOS for compatible standalone routers. NETGEAR lists the R6900, R6900P, R6900v2, and R7000 as compatible.

Read the complete model number on the router label before starting. NETGEAR identifies the R7000 and R6900P as end-of-support products and recommends replacing them.

Attach the router's antennas. Then connect your modem or incoming Ethernet cable to the router's Internet port. Connect the router to power.

Install Nighthawk using the store links on NETGEAR's official Nighthawk app page. Open Nighthawk. Use the WiFi credentials or QR code on the router label when prompted. Complete the app's guided internet and wireless setup.

If you prefer a browser, install locally

Browser installation handles standalone AC1900 router setup without the mobile app.

Connect your modem to the router's Internet port. Power on the router. Then connect your setup device to the WiFi network printed on the router label, or connect a computer to a LAN port with an Ethernet cable.

Open routerlogin.net in your browser. If the page recommends the app, select If you don't have a compatible smartphone, click here. Complete the installation wizard.

Personalize your WiFi and administrator password

On the R7000 and R6900, set the WiFi password for joining your network and the administrator password for opening browser settings; Nighthawk also uses a separate MyNETGEAR account.

  1. 1.While connected to the router, open routerlogin.net and sign in with its local administrator credentials.
  2. 2.Select Wireless and edit Name (SSID) and Password (Network Key) for the networks you want to change.
  3. 3.Select Apply, then reconnect your wireless devices using the new WiFi credentials.
  4. 4.Open ADVANCED > Administration > Set Password.
  5. 5.Enter the existing administrator password and your replacement password twice. For password recovery, select Enable Password Recovery and complete the recovery prompts.
  6. 6.Select Apply to save the administrator password.

C7000v2 cable setup needs provider activation

The C7000v2 combines a cable modem and router. It needs a coaxial connection, compatible cable service, and provider activation. These instructions apply specifically to the C7000v2; the C7000 and C6900 have separate setup requirements.

Connect the coaxial cable to the C7000v2. Connect power. Wait for the Online indicator to remain green. Then join the WiFi network printed on the label, or connect your computer by Ethernet.

Open routerlogin.net or 192.168.0.1 in a browser. Accept the terms presented during installation. Set your administrator credentials when prompted. Complete the recovery questions.

Review the wireless credentials shown during setup. Complete your cable provider's current self-activation process. For Xfinity service, NETGEAR specifies activation through the Xfinity app before Nighthawk router installation.

If activation fails or self-activation is unavailable, contact your cable provider with the modem model, serial number, and cable MAC address from the label to obtain provisioning confirmation.

When the WiFi network is missing

A switched-off wireless radio prevents the router from broadcasting its WiFi network.

Check whether the wireless radios are off before using the button. On the R7000 and R6900, the WiFi On/Off button toggles the radios, so pressing it while they're on turns them off. If the radios are off, hold WiFi On/Off for two seconds.

Radios disabled through the browser settings must be re-enabled there. For that route, connect a computer to the router by Ethernet. Sign in at routerlogin.net with the router's administrator credentials. Open ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Wireless settings.

Select Enable Wireless Router Radio for each band you want to use. Select Apply.

If setup finishes but internet access does not work

On the R7000, rerun automatic internet detection from the router's settings. Keep your setup device connected locally to the router.

Sign in at routerlogin.net. Open ADVANCED > Setup Wizard. Choose Yes. Select Next to detect the connection's servers and protocols.

If detection fails, open Internet to enter your provider's settings manually. Use the matching connection type below.

For an R7000 or R6900 connection without an ISP login, select No for the login question. Select Get Dynamically from ISP for DHCP, or Use Static IP Address if your provider supplied a fixed address. For a static connection, enter the provider's IP address, subnet, and gateway.

Enter any DNS or MAC-address settings your provider requires. Select Apply. Select Test.

For an R7000 connection requiring an ISP login, select Yes for the login question instead. Under Internet Service Provider, select the protocol your provider requires: PPPoE, L2TP, or PPTP. Enter your ISP credentials. Enter any service, addressing, or DNS information supplied by your provider.

Select Apply. If automatic detection doesn't establish the connection, use the manual Internet settings above that match your provider's requirements.

Finish with a firmware update

Connect your phone to the compatible standalone router's WiFi. Open Nighthawk. Sign in when prompted. Tap the router image.

Tap CHECK FOR UPDATES. Tap UPDATE when an update is offered. Keep the router powered throughout the update. Use this update procedure for compatible standalone routers; cable modem routers require a different firmware process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I set up a previously used R7000 without its old settings?

Yes. With the R7000 powered on, hold Reset or Restore Factory Settings for seven seconds, then release it. Wait for the reset to finish before repeating app or browser installation. This deletes the existing configuration. The same procedure applies to the R6900; follow model-specific instructions for other hardware.

Does the WPS button complete internet setup?

No. WPS connects a compatible device to WiFi; it does not configure the ISP connection. On the R7000, press the router's WPS button, then activate WPS on the device within two minutes.

Can I use Nighthawk with every AC1900 modem router?

No. The C7000v2 requires firmware 1.03.01 or later for Nighthawk compatibility. The C7000, C6900, and D7000 are absent from NETGEAR's compatibility list. Use instructions for your complete model number.

Can I use an AC1900 router as a wired access point?

Yes, on models supporting AP mode, including the R7000 and R6900 family. This requires an Ethernet connection to an existing router. Wireless bridge mode serves a different purpose: it connects Ethernet devices through a wireless uplink.
