Found a GIF you want to keep, but can't find the save button? The right steps depend on whether it's in a message, on a website, or stored in an app. Here's how to save it to Photos or Files, keep a copy offline, and check playback when it won't move.
Save a GIF from Messages
If someone sent you a GIF in Messages, save it straight to Photos. You don't need a separate GIF app.
Open Messages.
Open the conversation containing the GIF.
Touch and hold the GIF.
Tap Save to add it to Photos.
Download a GIF from a website
In Chrome, open the webpage containing the GIF. The website must supply an actual GIF image; a moving image on a page isn't proof that the file is a GIF.
Touch and hold the image, then tap Save Image. A still preview or video won't become a GIF through this command.
For a direct GIF file, open the file in Chrome. Use Share > Save to Files, select a destination, then tap Save.
To choose where Safari puts file downloads, go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Downloads. Select iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, or Other. This controls file downloads, not saving to Photos.
Keep a GIF attached to an email
Open Mail.
Open the message containing the GIF attachment.
Touch and hold the image attachment.
Choose Save Image to save it to Photos, or Save to Files to keep the attachment as a file.
For the Files option, select your destination.
Tap Save to finish saving the file.
Check that the attachment itself contains the GIF, rather than a still image linking to an animation.
Retrieve a GIF from Google Photos or Drive
Use these steps when the GIF is stored in your Google account.
In Google Photos, select the GIF.
Open More.
Tap Download. This option is unavailable when the item already exists in your camera roll.
For a GIF in Google Drive, tap More beside the file.
Choose Send a copy.
Tap Save image if the file offers image saving.
To keep the Drive attachment as a file instead, open More beside it.
Choose Open in.
Tap Save to Files.
Select a destination.
Tap Save.
Make a cloud-stored GIF available offline
A GIF in iCloud Drive doesn't have to stay dependent on a connection. Open Files and locate the GIF in iCloud Drive.
Touch and hold the file, then tap Keep Downloaded to keep it downloaded on your iPhone.
If Keep Downloaded is absent, Apple says the file is already on your iPhone.
Review Photos access when saving fails
If an app won't save an image to Photos, check its permitted access.
Open Settings.
Go to Privacy & Security.
Tap Photos.
Select the app you're using.
Review its permitted access. The available choices depend on what the app requests.
If saving still fails, try saving to Files: in Chrome, open the GIF file and use Share > Save to Files. In Mail, touch and hold the attachment and choose Save to Files. For either route, select a destination and tap Save.
Enable automatic playback when a GIF stays still
This enables automatic playback for supported animated images in Messages and Safari.
Open Settings.
Tap Accessibility.
Open Motion.
Turn on Auto-Play Animated Images. This changes playback, not the saved file format.
If you saved a still preview or screenshot, return to the original source for the actual GIF file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I find GIFs on my iPhone without installing another app?
Yes. In Messages, open or compose a conversation. Tap the add (+) button, then choose #images. Use Find images to search, select a GIF, and send it. To save it afterward, touch and hold it in the conversation and tap Save. #images is available in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, India, Singapore, Philippines, and Japan. If it's missing, check Settings > General > Language & Region.
Does adding a GIF to GIPHY Favorites save it to my iPhone?
No. If you're signed in to a GIPHY account, selecting the heart icon saves a favorite to that account for reuse. Without an account, GIPHY says favorites on your phone are saved only locally and could be lost. It doesn't save a GIF file to Apple Photos.
How can I export the original GIF from Photos to Files?
In Photos, open Library. Tap Select, then select the GIF. Open Share and choose Export Unmodified Originals (some Apple instructions label it Export Unmodified Original). Select a Files destination, then tap Save. This exports the imported original format.
Does iCloud Photos keep every GIF downloaded on my iPhone?
No. iCloud Photos stores GIFs at their original resolution, but optimized storage doesn't keep every original downloaded. To retain originals on your iPhone in iOS 27, go to Settings > your name > iCloud > Photos > iPhone Storage and select Download and Keep Originals. In iOS 26, go to Settings > your name > iCloud > Photos and select Download and Keep Originals. This setting applies to the photo library, not just one GIF.
