A forgotten Discord password is usually fixed from the login screen, but the reset depends on the email inbox tied to the account. If multi-factor authentication is enabled, Discord will ask for that check before you finish getting back in. Start with the email reset, then use the signed-in, MFA, or recovery path that matches your situation.

Reset from the Discord login screen

This fixes a forgotten Discord password when you can open the account email inbox.

Open the Discord desktop app login screen or go to discord.com/login in a desktop browser.

Enter the email address tied to your Discord account.

Select Forgot your password?.

Open the reset email Discord sends to that address.

Follow the email instructions to set a new password.

Complete the MFA prompt when Discord asks for it.

Use the mobile reset flow

On iPhone, Android, or a mobile browser, use the same email-based reset path.

  1. 1.Open the Discord mobile app login screen or go to discord.com/login in your mobile browser.
  2. 2.Enter the email address tied to the account.
  3. 3.Tap Forgot your password?.
  4. 4.Open the reset email sent to that inbox.
  5. 5.Follow the email instructions to create the new password, then complete MFA when prompted.

Change it while signed in on desktop

Use this path when you can still open Discord and you know your current password. In the desktop app or web version, open the User Settings cogwheel next to your Discord username.

Go to My Account, then choose Change Password. Enter your current password and your new password.

When Discord asks for MFA, enter the code to finish the change. Use the new password the next time you sign in.

Change it in the mobile app

This method applies when you are already signed in on the Discord iOS or Android app and you still know the current password.

Tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner.

Tap the cogwheel in the top-right corner.

Open Account under Account Settings.

Tap Password.

Enter your current password and your new password, then tap Change Password.

Enter the MFA code when Discord prompts for it.

Find which email is on the account

If you are not sure which email belongs to your Discord account, narrow it down before trying another reset.

  1. 1.If you are signed in somewhere, open User Settings and go to My Account to see the email address.
  2. 2.If you are signed out, enter a possible email address on the login page and press Forgot your Password.
  3. 3.Check that inbox for a reset email from Discord.
  4. 4.Search your other inboxes for emails from Discord, then repeat the reset check with any likely address.
  5. 5.If your account has a phone number tied to it, log in with the phone number, then check User Settings and My Account for the email.

Get past MFA during the reset

This applies when the password reset works, but Discord stops you at a multi-factor authentication prompt. You need a recovery method that was already set up on the account.

To use a backup code, select Verify with something else, choose Use a backup code, enter an unused 8-digit backup code, and press Confirm.

To use SMS MFA, select Verify with something else, choose Use a code sent to your phone, enter the SMS code, and press Confirm. SMS MFA only helps if it was enabled before the lockout.

To use a passkey or security key, complete the passkey or security key challenge when Discord asks for it. The login page may show Or, sign in with Passkey instead, and security keys may appear after you enter your username and password through Authenticate with security key.

Once you are back in and need to reset MFA, go to User Settings, open My Account, choose Remove Authenticator App, then select Okay.

Recover after your email was changed

If someone changed the email address on your Discord account, use the recovery email sent to your original inbox. Open the Discord Email Address changed email and choose Start Account Recovery.

Confirm that the page address starts with https://discord.com/wasntme/. On the Account Recovery page, press Start revert process.

Follow the prompts and provide a new password. Discord reverts the email address, logs out all devices, updates the password, removes any phone number, removes MFA methods, and invalidates newer recovery URLs.

The recovery link Discord sends to your original email address is valid for 48 hours. It also fails if a recovery was already completed on the account using an earlier link, or if that original address is now in use by another Discord account. Once the link expires, Discord Support cannot send you a new one.

Report a hacked account when reset is not enough

Go to dis.gd/hackedaccount or use the Discord support form.

Sign in to a Discord support account when required.

Submit the compromised-account report with the required information.

When you still can, reset the password and enable MFA first.

Support reports are an escalation path, not a guarantee that Discord can directly reset the password for you.

Keep the original email inbox open while you work, because Discord sends the most useful account recovery messages there.

Know what Discord does not support

The most common dead end is losing access to the account email, because Discord's password reset depends on that inbox.

If you cannot access the account email, regain access through your email provider first. Discord Support cannot change the email address associated with the account.

If you are locked out of MFA and do not have backup codes or another usable MFA method, Discord cannot remove MFA or issue new backup codes.

Older advice may suggest asking Discord Support to reset the password directly. Support cannot do that. The standard path is the email-based Forgot your password? flow, and on an ordinary account a phone number only helps you log in and find the account email.

Discord documents one exception. If you accidentally created a second Discord account with your phone number instead of attaching that number to your main account, open an incognito browser window and go to the login page, enter your phone number instead of an email address, press Forgot your password?, enter the SMS code Discord texts you, then set your new password and press Change Password.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Discord Support reset my password for me?

No. Discord Support does not reset passwords directly. Use the email-based Forgot your password? flow or the account recovery option that fits your situation.

Can I reset my Discord password without access to my email?

Usually not. Discord's standard reset sends the instructions to the email inbox tied to the account, so regain access through your email provider first. The one documented exception is an accidental account you created with a phone number: enter that number at the login page, press Forgot your password?, enter the SMS code, and set a new password.

Where are Discord backup codes usually saved?

Discord backup codes may be saved in a file named discord_backup_codes.txt or kept as a saved screenshot. Use an unused 8-digit code at the MFA prompt.

Can I reset a Discord password with only my phone number?

Normally no. A phone number helps you log in and find the account email, and the reset itself runs through that email. The exception Discord documents is an account accidentally created with the phone number itself, where you enter the number at the login page, select Forgot your password?, verify the SMS code, and create a new password.
