Installing Windows on a Chromebook is not a normal upgrade, and ChromeOS does not include a supported switch for replacing itself with Windows. Google does not offer a Chromebook Settings path, ChromeOS toggle, account setting, browser option, Assistant command, or hardware-key workflow that installs Windows over ChromeOS. Here is the clean answer: check whether your model qualifies for the unofficial firmware route, then use a remote or app-based Windows option when it does not.
Check whether your Chromebook qualifies
Start with the board name, not the retail model or family name. MrChromebox determines support by board name alone, not by make, model, or CPU, and the device names in its table are reference-only and may be incomplete because many models and sub-models share one board.
Confirm that the Chromebook uses an Intel or AMD x86_64 processor.
Get the hardware ID (HWID) from the Recovery screen or the Developer Mode screen. The board name is the first part of the HWID, before any spaces or hyphens.
Open the MrChromebox Supported Devices list, find that board name in the HWID/Board Name column, and confirm the UEFI Firmware (Full ROM) column shows support for it.
Stop if the Chromebook uses ARM, MediaTek, Qualcomm, Rockchip, or NVIDIA Tegra hardware.
Stop if your board name is missing from the MrChromebox Supported Devices list, or if its UEFI Firmware (Full ROM) column does not show support.
Back up your files before moving forward, because the firmware route changes recovery behavior and wipes data during the process. You will also back up the stock firmware itself during the flashing steps below.
Tip: if you only need Microsoft Office, one work app, or occasional Windows access, skip the local install and use one of the remote options below.
Use community firmware on supported Intel and AMD models
This method applies only to selected Intel and AMD x86_64 Chromebooks listed by MrChromebox. It is not supported by Google, Microsoft, or most Chromebook makers.
Read that listing as a firmware listing, not a Windows compatibility list. MrChromebox states that a device having firmware available does not imply any level of functionality when running an OS other than ChromeOS, and that some boards are better supported under Windows than others. Check the Chrultrabook documentation and CoolStar’s Windows Install Helper for your board’s driver status before you flash, and expect some drivers to be paid.
Enter Developer Mode from the Recovery screen by pressing Ctrl+D.
Confirm Turn OS Verification OFF or Enable Developer Mode with Enter.
Disable firmware write protection using the method for your exact model: write-protect screw, battery disconnect, jumper, or SuzyQ/CCD.
Run the MrChromebox Firmware Utility Script.
Use the script’s stock firmware backup option first and save the backup to external storage. MrChromebox highly recommends this before flashing Full ROM firmware, and it is what you need to recover from a bad flash or return the device to ChromeOS.
Choose Install/Update UEFI (Full ROM) Firmware.
Create official Windows 11 x64 USB installation media. Windows 11 is the current choice for a 2026 install, and Chrultrabook supports only recent Windows 10 and 11 builds.
Treat Windows 10 as a fallback only. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so a Windows 10 install receives no further security updates unless the device is enrolled in Extended Security Updates.
Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 page for Create Windows 11 Installation Media or Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices. The Windows 11 Installation Assistant requires an existing Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC and does not run on Arm-based PCs.
Check Windows 11 eligibility before you install it. Microsoft requires a compatible 64-bit processor at 1GHz or faster with 2 or more cores, 4GB of RAM, 64GB or larger storage, UEFI, Secure Boot capable firmware, and TPM 2.0, and its download page warns that a PC installed outside those requirements will no longer be supported and will not be entitled to receive updates.
Use the current Chrultrabook procedure if your board cannot clear those checks. Its Windows guide sets the BypassTPMCheck and BypassSecureBootCheck registry values during setup, which is what puts the machine into that unsupported, no-guaranteed-updates state.
Boot the Chromebook from the USB installer and install Windows.
After setup, use Chrultrabook resources for board-specific drivers.
Fix a Windows installer that will not boot
The most common cause is an unsupported Chromebook board, even when the model name looks close to one that works.
Recheck your board name, not the retail model, in the HWID/Board Name column of the MrChromebox Supported Devices list, and confirm its UEFI Firmware (Full ROM) support.
Confirm again that the Chromebook is Intel or AMD x86_64.
Replace old installation media with current official Windows 11 x64 media, or with a recent Windows 10 build only if you accept that Windows 10 has been out of support since October 14, 2025.
Ignore the Windows 11 Arm64 ISO for this job. Microsoft provides it for supported Arm-based PCs and Arm VMs, not as a supported Chromebook install path.
If the installer still refuses to boot, stop the local install attempt and use Chrome Remote Desktop, Windows App, Windows 365, Cameyo, or CrossOver.
Connect to your own Windows PC
On the Windows computer, open Chrome and go to remotedesktop.google.com/access.
Under Set up Remote Access, click Download.
Follow the onscreen directions to install Chrome Remote Desktop.
On the Chromebook, open the Chrome Remote Desktop app or go to remotedesktop.google.com.
Open Menu.
Choose Remote Access.
Select your Windows computer.
For one-time help, go to remotedesktop.google.com/support on the computer being shared.
Choose Get Support, select Download, then select Generate Code.
Share the code, approve Share, and end the session with Stop Sharing.
Tip: this does not install Windows locally, but it gives you a real Windows desktop from a Chromebook you already own.
Open Windows 365 in the browser
This method applies when your organization assigns you a Windows 365 Business or Enterprise Cloud PC. It gives you a Windows desktop in ChromeOS without installing Windows on the Chromebook.
Open a supported browser on the Chromebook and go to windows.cloud.microsoft.com.
Sign in with the work or school account assigned to the Cloud PC.
Under Your Cloud PCs, select Open in browser.
Use the gear icon during the session for Use hardware acceleration and High DPI.
Open In Session Settings, then Show advanced settings, and switch Alternative keyboard layout to On when keyboard mapping needs adjustment.
Use the gear icon on the Cloud PC card for Rename or Reset.
Set up Windows App from Google Play
Install Windows App from Google Play on a Chromebook with Play Store support and ChromeOS 126 or later.
Open Windows App.
Choose Got it or Skip on first run.
For a remote PC, enable Remote Desktop access on the Windows computer first.
Tap the plus button.
Choose PC connection.
Tap PC Name.
Enter the host name or IP address.
Add a user account, friendly name, and device or audio redirection settings when needed.
Tap Save.
Open the Devices tab.
Tap the remote PC and choose Connect.
Tip: sign in with the assigned work or school account to access Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Dev Box, and Remote Desktop Services resources.
Run one Windows app with CrossOver
This fixes the “I need one Windows app” problem, not the “I need the Windows operating system” problem.
Enable the Linux development environment on the Chromebook.
Use CrossOver for Linux on ChromeOS.
Increase the Linux VM disk size to at least 10GB.
Copy Windows installers from ChromeOS Downloads into Linux Downloads, or share ChromeOS Downloads with Linux.
Install the Windows app inside CrossOver.
Ask your administrator for the managed option
This method applies when a business, school, or other organization controls the Chromebook. Admin policies control firmware changes, Linux access, Android apps, remote desktop tools, and virtual app delivery.
Ask the administrator which Windows option the organization supports.
Use Windows 365 Cloud PC, Windows App, Chrome Remote Desktop, Cameyo by Google, or another managed remote app setup when assigned.
Use Cameyo by Google when the organization publishes Windows or client-based apps to Chrome or as Progressive Web Apps from the app shelf.
Treat Parallels Desktop for ChromeOS as an old enterprise path. Support for existing customers ended on April 21, 2026, so it is not a current consumer solution.
Avoid old Chromebook Windows tricks
Old tutorials make Windows on a Chromebook sound like a normal replacement install. That is false for most people: ChromeOS has no supported direct Windows installation path for consumer Chromebooks.
Older Microsoft Remote Desktop Android client instructions also appear in search results. Current Windows access guidance points Chromebook users to Windows App.
Parallels Desktop for ChromeOS appears in older business guides, but its support window for existing customers ended on April 21, 2026.
If the local install fails, use Chrome Remote Desktop for your own PC, Windows 365 for an assigned work desktop, Windows App for supported remote resources, Cameyo for managed app delivery, or CrossOver for compatible Windows apps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install Windows on any Chromebook?
No. ChromeOS has no supported consumer feature for installing Windows over ChromeOS, and the community firmware route is limited to selected Intel and AMD x86_64 models.
Can I install Windows on an ARM Chromebook?
No through the MrChromebox route. That firmware path excludes ARM, MediaTek, Qualcomm, Rockchip, and NVIDIA Tegra Chromebooks. Microsoft’s Windows 11 Arm64 ISO is for supported Arm PCs and Arm VMs.
What is the safest way to use Windows on a Chromebook?
Use Chrome Remote Desktop for an existing Windows PC, Windows App for supported remote resources, or Windows 365 when your organization assigns you a Cloud PC.
Does CrossOver install Windows on ChromeOS?
No. CrossOver runs compatible Windows apps through the Linux part of ChromeOS. It does not install the Windows operating system.
