Minecraft shaders do not install the same way in every edition. Java Edition uses shader loaders such as Iris or OptiFine, while Bedrock Edition uses built-in enhanced graphics through Settings > Video > Graphics Mode. Start with the path for your edition, then add the visual pack from the right menu.

1. Check your Minecraft edition

On PC, install Minecraft from the official Minecraft download page, open Minecraft Launcher, sign in, then install Minecraft: Java Edition or Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. Bedrock players use the built-in graphics menu at Settings > Video > Graphics Mode. Java players install a shader loader first, then place shader pack .zip files in the Minecraft shaderpacks folder.

2. Turn on Bedrock enhanced graphics

Launch Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on a supported device.

Open Settings.

Select Video.

Open Graphics Mode.

Select Vibrant Visuals.

To switch back, return to Graphics Mode and select a non-Vibrant Visuals mode.

3. Find Bedrock Marketplace visual content

Open Minecraft Marketplace.

Browse content marked with the Vibrant Visuals tag.

Download new content, or download the update for compatible content you already own.

Open Settings > Video > Graphics Mode.

Select Vibrant Visuals.

Open the compatible Marketplace content.

4. Install Java shaders with Iris

Go to the official Iris download page.

Select Download for Windows .exe installer or Download Universal JAR.

Run the Iris installer.

Choose your Minecraft Version.

Click Install.

Open Minecraft Launcher.

Launch the installed Iris/Sodium profile.

Place shader pack .zip files in the Minecraft shaderpacks folder.

In Minecraft, open Options > Video Settings > Shader Packs.

Select the shader pack.

Click Apply.

Use the official Iris download page instead of third-party rehosted installers.

5. Install Java shaders with OptiFine

Go to the official OptiFine downloads page.

Find the OptiFine build that matches your Minecraft version.

Click Download or (Mirror).

Run the downloaded .jar file.

Click Install.

Open Minecraft Launcher.

Choose the OptiFine profile.

Click Play.

Place shader pack .zip files in .minecraft\shaderpacks.

In game, open Options > Video Settings > Shaders.

Choose the shader pack.

6. Add shaders through CurseForge or Modrinth

This fixes version matching for loader-based Java shader installs.

For CurseForge, install the CurseForge App, open the Minecraft tab, and click + Create.

Choose a Profile Name, Minecraft Version, Game Type, and Modloader Version, then click Create.

Open the profile and click Add More Content.

Install Iris Shaders and Sodium for Fabric, or use the matching NeoForge shader-loader route.

To add a shader pack in CurseForge, open My Modpacks, select the profile, click Add More Content, change the drop-down from Mods to Shaders, choose a shader, and click Install.

For Modrinth, install the Modrinth App, create or open a Minecraft instance, search for Iris Shaders and Sodium, then add a shader from the Shaders category.

Launch the profile or instance.

In Minecraft, open Options > Video Settings > Shader Packs.

Select the pack, then click Apply.

7. Remove shaders or switch back

With Iris in Java Edition, open Options > Video Settings > Shader Packs, choose a different pack or disable the active one, then click Apply.

With OptiFine in Java Edition, open Options > Video Settings > Shaders, then switch away from the active shader pack.

In CurseForge, open My Modpacks, select the profile, open Profile Options, check Allow content management for this profile, and click Done.

Use Add More Content to manage profile content, or turn off shader-related mods from Installed Mods.

In Bedrock Edition, open Settings > Video > Graphics Mode.

Select a non-Vibrant Visuals mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install the same shader pack on Java and Bedrock?

No. Java shader packs use loaders such as Iris or OptiFine. Bedrock uses built-in options like Vibrant Visuals, compatible Marketplace content, and RTX ray tracing worlds on supported Windows devices.

Where do shader pack zip files go in Java Edition?

After installing Iris or OptiFine, put shader pack .zip files in the Minecraft shaderpacks folder. Then enable the pack from Video Settings in Minecraft.

Do Minecraft shaders work on phones?

Iris does not support Bedrock Edition or phones. On Bedrock, use the built-in Vibrant Visuals path on supported devices.

What should I do if a shader tutorial tells me to install a .mcpack shader?

Check what is inside it before you judge it. A .mcpack is still Bedrock's current packaged resource pack format, so the file extension alone is not the problem, and current Vibrant Visuals packs use it too. What is outdated is the pre-Render Dragon third-party GLSL shader hack that some tutorials still link, because those are not supported on Render Dragon devices. For a pack to add the new physically based detail it needs the "pbr" capability in its manifest.json. Install packs only from sources you trust, and get the visual upgrade itself from Vibrant Visuals, compatible Marketplace content, or RTX Marketplace worlds.

Can a Java server install shader packs for players?

No. A Java server can prompt players to download a resource pack through server.properties, but it does not install Iris or OptiFine shader packs on player clients.
