Need to put ™ after a name in your Word document? Start with a keyboard shortcut, or copy the character below and paste it straight into place. The desktop methods cover Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, and Word 2021, with separate options for browsers, phones, and tablets.
Insert ™ with a keyboard shortcut
These shortcuts insert ™ directly in desktop Word using a U.S. keyboard layout. Click where you want ™ in your document.
On Windows, press Ctrl+Alt+T. On Mac, press Option+2. For a different keyboard layout, use the symbol menu described below.
Copy and paste the character
Only need the symbol once? Copy and paste works in both desktop Word and Word for the web.
Copy this character: ™. Then click the destination in your Word document and press Ctrl+V on Windows or Command+V on Mac. For text-only pasting in Word for the web, use Ctrl+Shift+V on Windows or Command+Shift+V on Mac in Chrome, Firefox, or Chromium-based Edge.
Choose ™ from Word’s symbol menu
In Word for Windows, click where the symbol belongs, then open Insert > Symbol. Select ™ from the gallery. If it isn’t there, open More Symbols.
On the Symbols tab, choose Segoe UI Symbol under Font. Double-click ™ to insert it, then select Close.
To locate it by code in the same dialog, set from to Unicode (hex) and enter 2122 in Character code. Another route is the Special Characters tab: double-click the trademark character, then select Close.
On Mac, open the Insert tab and select Symbol. Browse Symbols or select Special Characters, then select ™.
Restore the (tm) AutoCorrect replacement
A disabled AutoCorrect replacement or a missing (tm) entry leaves your typed shortcut unchanged. In Word for Windows, type (tm) followed by Spacebar or Enter to trigger the replacement. If it stays as ordinary text, insert ™ with Ctrl+Alt+T.
Select the inserted character, then open File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options. On the AutoCorrect tab, enable Replace text as you type.
Enter (tm), or an uncommon trigger such as tmshort, in Replace. Confirm that ™ appears under With. Select Add, then select OK to close the AutoCorrect dialog.
Select OK again to close Word’s options. Type your trigger followed by Spacebar or Enter to insert ™.
For a custom replacement on Mac, open Word > Preferences > AutoCorrect. Enable Replace text as you type, then select the + button to add an entry.
Enter tmshort in Replace and paste ™ into With. Press Enter to save the entry. Type the trigger in Word and complete the word to invoke AutoCorrect.
Don’t rely on desktop custom entries carrying over to Word for the web. Use the browser insertion options below.
Use a character code on Windows
Word for Windows converts the Unicode code 2122 into ™. This method needs no numeric keypad.
Type 2122 where the trademark symbol belongs. Select those four digits. This prevents preceding hexadecimal characters from becoming part of the code. Press Alt+X to turn the selection into ™.
For a numeric-keypad alternative, use Alt+0153 with a compatible Windows character encoding and input locale. The number keys above the letters do not substitute for the keypad.
Turn Num Lock on if your keypad requires it. Hold Alt while typing 0153 on the numeric keypad. Release Alt to insert ™. If the Alt code fails with your input locale, use the 2122 and Alt+X method above.
Find ™ in Word for the web
The web Emoji gallery and your computer’s character picker insert ™ in a browser. Click the destination in your Word document, then open Insert > Emoji > More Emojis. Select the trade mark character, ™.
If your interface lacks that gallery, use the copy-and-paste method above. For the Windows 11 picker, press Windows+. (period) while the document has focus. Select Symbols, then select ™ from the available characters.
On Mac, open Character Viewer through Edit > Emoji & Symbols, or press Fn/Globe+E. Search for trademark. Click ™ to insert it, or double-click it when the viewer is expanded.
On a Chromebook with Quick Insert, press the Quick Insert key while the document has focus, or Launcher+F or Google+F when that key is absent. Search for ™ or browse the symbols. Highlight the trademark result, then press Enter to insert it.
Add the symbol on a phone or tablet
Tap where you want the symbol in Word on your iPhone or iPad. Tap the Emoji or globe button on Apple’s standard keyboard. Browse to ™, or enter trademark in Search Emoji when your keyboard includes search. Tap ™ to insert it.
If the Emoji keyboard is missing, add it through Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard > Emoji.
On an Android phone or tablet with Gboard already enabled, tap the insertion point in Word. Tap Gboard’s Emoji button. Find ™ among the emoji and tap ™. Tap ABC to return to letters.
For repeated use on iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement. Tap Add, then paste ™ into Phrase. Enter tmshort in Shortcut and tap Save.
Type your saved shortcut in Word to insert its replacement. Choose an uncommon shortcut so it stays distinct from the words you normally type.
Frequently Asked Questions

For ®, press Ctrl+Alt+R in Word for Windows or Option+R in Word for Mac. These desktop shortcuts use a U.S. keyboard layout.
How can I stop Word from automatically changing my trademark shortcut?
