YouTube TV opens, but the picture stays black, sometimes while the sound keeps playing. Start by reopening the program, then work through the checks for your device below. Whether one channel is blank or everything fails, narrowing down where playback breaks gives you a clear next step.

Restart playback and narrow down the problem

Close the program you’re watching and open it again. Then try another channel or program. If only one recording has missing video, report it using that recording’s video-player reporting control.

Close and reopen the YouTube TV app or your browser. Next, restart your viewing device. For supported TVs and mobile devices, Google recommends shutting down for 30 seconds before turning the device back on.

Open another streaming app on the same device. If that also fails, focus on the device or network. If multiple YouTube TV programs fail but other apps work, check YouTube TV’s announcements or contact support using the steps at the end.

Tip: Note whether the black screen affects one program, all of YouTube TV, or other apps too, so you can report exactly what fails.

Check the display when sound still plays

If you hear the program but see nothing, check the display connection. Google specifically flags external displays as a playback issue in Safari and Chrome.

On a computer, disconnect external monitors, display adapters, and docks. Then retry YouTube TV on the computer’s built-in screen.

For a Roku streaming player connected through HDMI, disconnect the HDMI cable at both ends. Unplug power from the Roku and TV or receiver. Reconnect the HDMI cable firmly. Restore power.

Try YouTube TV again. If the picture stays black, test another HDMI port. Next, test a different short HDMI cable. Then connect the Roku directly to the TV, bypassing any receiver or switch.

For Apple TV, select the TV input that matches its HDMI connection. Reseat the Apple TV’s HDMI cable. If the screen remains black, test a replacement HDMI cable.

Connect Apple TV directly to the television to bypass receivers or switches. Unplug Apple TV for 30 seconds before reconnecting it.

For Google TV Streamer or a supported Chromecast, connect the supplied power adapter. Select the matching TV input. Disconnect the streaming device’s power for one minute before reconnecting it.

Restore the connection and ease playback demands

A dropped internet connection interrupts YouTube TV playback. Reconnect your device to Wi-Fi or mobile data. Retry the program.

If playback still fails, unplug your router for 30 seconds. Reconnect the router. Try playback again once the internet connection returns.

On a computer, open the player’s settings gear. Select Quality. Choose a lower resolution.

On mobile, open the player’s overflow menu. Select Quality. Choose a lower resolution.

For interruptions in the television app, open the player’s three-dot menu. Select Broadcast Delay, where available. Choose Default to restore the standard live buffer.

Update the app and repair its local data

Start with available YouTube TV and device software updates. On Android, install the YouTube TV update through Google Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Updates available. On iPhone or iPad, update it through App Store > profile icon > App Updates.

On Roku, highlight YouTube TV on Home and press the remote’s Star button. Select Check for Updates.

On Fire TV, clear the app cache through Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > YouTube TV > Clear Cache. On a Pixel phone, use Settings > Apps > See all apps > YouTube TV > Storage & cache > Clear cache. Android menu labels differ by manufacturer.

If those repairs fail, uninstall YouTube TV on devices that permit removal, reinstall it from the official app store, and sign in again; deletion risks losing local app data. On Samsung TVs with this interface, use Apps > settings gear > YouTube TV > Delete, or choose Reinstall when deletion is unavailable. After deleting the Samsung app, press Return, use the search icon to find YouTube TV, and select Install.

Fix playback in your browser

Use these checks when the computer picture stays blank after a restart and the external-display test. Follow the instructions for your browser.

In Chrome, open the three-dot menu and select New Incognito Window. Sign in to YouTube TV. Test playback.

If playback works there, return to a regular window. Open Extensions > Manage extensions. Disable your extensions. Turn them back on individually, testing playback after each one to identify the extension causing trouble.

Select Remove for the interfering extension. To clear Chrome’s stored data, open the three-dot menu and select Delete browsing data. Clearing cookies risks signing you out of websites.

Choose a time range. Select Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data. Select Delete data. Sign in to YouTube TV again.

For JavaScript, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Javascript. Select Sites can use Javascript. Reload YouTube TV.

For protected video, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Additional content settings > Protected content IDs. Under Default behavior, select the affirmative option, currently labeled Sites can use content protection services. On Windows and ChromeOS, also leave Sites can use identifiers to play protected content allowed, because blocking it can reduce playback quality.

If YouTube TV asks Google to verify your device’s identity, select Allow. Google describes this verification primarily as a playback-quality requirement.

In Firefox, open Settings. Find and enable Play DRM-controlled content. If it is already enabled, turn it off and back on to reload the DRM components.

For Safari on Mac, press Shift-Command-N to open a private window. Test YouTube TV there. If that works, open Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data. Select the affected site.

Choose Remove. Select Done. Retry YouTube TV in a normal window.

Refresh your location and disconnect VPNs

Google says VPN and proxy connections prevent YouTube TV streaming. Disconnect the active service through its app or operating-system controls. Retry YouTube TV.

When the television app needs your current location, select your profile picture > Location. Google documents two TV layouts: its streaming-troubleshooting and Computer help pages say to select Current Playback Area, while its Android help page says to select Update beside Current playback area. Use whichever your TV app shows. On a nearby phone, open tv.youtube.com/verify and allow location access.

In a browser or the mobile app, select your profile picture > Location. Select Update beside Current playback area. Use current-location verification for routine travel instead of changing your Home area.

If Chrome blocks location access, open the three-dot menu > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Location. Permit location requests and access for YouTube TV. If a work or school device prevents changes, contact its administrator.

Get help when the picture still won’t return

Give support the playback details you collected, including whether sound continues and which programs fail.

  1. 1.On a television player with diagnostics, open the player controls and select More, then the bug icon, to display Stats for nerds. Include that information in your report.
  2. 2.Select your profile picture > Send feedback. Describe whether sound continues and whether other channels and streaming apps work.
  3. 3.For direct support, sign in on a computer or mobile device and open Help > Contact us > YouTube TV. Describe the problem, continue through Next step, and choose an available contact option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn’t YouTube TV automatically play anything when I open it?

When startup autoplay is off, opening the app does not start playback automatically. In the television app, open Settings > Autoplay on Start and enable it. This setting controls startup playback; it does not repair a black picture after you select a program.

Can I cast YouTube TV while troubleshooting the TV app?

Yes, with a compatible Cast or supported AirPlay receiver. Connect your sending device and receiver to the same Wi-Fi. Open YouTube TV, select Cast or AirPlay, and choose the receiver. This gives you another playback route while you troubleshoot.

Why does Apple TV briefly go black when playback starts?

Apple confirms that switching video formats causes brief screen blackouts. Open Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content to inspect Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate. A brief format-switching blackout is different from a picture that never returns.

Does Roku need a special HDMI connection for 4K YouTube TV?

Roku requires an HDCP 2.2-compatible connection chain for 4K/HDR playback. That includes the display and any receiver or other equipment between the Roku player and television.
