Your Xbox Series X won't connect to WiFi, and getting online has turned into a troubleshooting session. Start with the network name and password, then let the console's connection test point you toward the next fix. These steps cover missing networks, dropped connections, router settings, and when to contact support.
Reconnect with the correct WiFi password
An incorrect network name or WiFi password stops your Xbox from joining the network.
Check your router's label for its original wireless password.
If you changed that password, find the current one in the router's configuration webpage using its documented address and sign-in credentials.
Open Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings > Manage wireless networks > Set up wireless network from the controller's Xbox button menu.
Select your network.
Enter its WiFi password.
Select Remember network when offered.
For a saved connection you want to configure again, open Settings > General > Network settings > Manage wireless networks > Manage my networks.
Forget that network using its available network-management controls.
Repeat the wireless setup above with the current password.
What the connection test tells you
Check the result under Xbox button > Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings > Test network connection. Keep the exact error handy, because it determines which fix to use.
If the console is set offline, select Go online under Network settings. That option appears when offline mode is active.
If the test displays Unplug the network cable, disconnect Ethernet from the console before repeating wireless setup.
For unavailable Xbox services after WiFi connects, check the Xbox status page on a connected phone or computer. An alert for the affected service means waiting for restoration before retrying.
Restart the console and networking equipment
Password correct, but still no connection? Restart the console next.
Hold the controller's Xbox button to open the Power Center.
Select Restart console > Restart.
If the console is unresponsive, hold its physical Xbox button for approximately 10 seconds until it shuts down.
Unplug the console's power cable for at least 10 seconds.
Reconnect the power cable.
Press the console's Xbox button to turn it on.
Unplug your modem, router, or gateway from power for five minutes.
Reconnect the modem or gateway first, allowing its normal indicators to return.
Reconnect a separate router next, allowing it to finish starting.
Retest through Settings > General > Network settings > Test network connection.
If restarting doesn't help, compare network visibility on the Xbox and another device, then check placement and interference below.
If your network is missing or the signal drops
Use these checks when the Xbox can't find your network or struggles to stay connected. Start by finding out whether the network is missing for every device.
Check whether a phone or computer detects the same WiFi network.
If no device sees it, check the router's WiFi radio and network-name broadcasting settings using its manufacturer's instructions. On compatible TP-Link routers, open Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings after signing into tplinkwifi.net.
Check Enable or Enable Wireless Radio for the required band.
Clear Hide SSID.
Select SAVE.
Move the router and console closer together, outside enclosed furniture and away from metal.
Move nearby interference sources away from the console.
Keep rear cables away from the console.
Disconnect power from any nearby third-party wireless headset base station.
Retest WiFi through Settings > General > Network settings > Test network connection.
When the connection supports it, check wireless strength and packet loss under Settings > General > Network settings > Test network speed & statistics before and after placement changes.
If other devices detect networks but your restarted Xbox detects none, use Xbox's hardware-error guidance and repair link to request support.
Restore automatic network settings
This corrects unsuitable manual IP or DNS settings on networks that provide automatic addressing.
Open Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings > Advanced settings from the Xbox button menu.
Record any existing manual IP and DNS settings before changing them.
Select IP settings > Automatic.
Select DNS settings > Automatic under Advanced settings.
If you previously configured an alternate MAC address, select Advanced settings > Alternate MAC address > Clear. This removes the alternate configuration without permanently changing the hardware MAC address.
Select Restart to complete that change.
Run Settings > General > Network settings > Test network connection again.
When router settings need attention
Check the router when your home wireless connection still fails after the basic fixes. The paths below apply to compatible TP-Link routers; other models need their manufacturer's instructions.
Sign into tplinkwifi.net.
Open Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings.
To test each WiFi band separately, disable Smart Connect. Separating the bands lets you choose which one the Xbox joins.
Give the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands distinct names under Network Name (SSID).
Select SAVE.
Connect the Xbox to the band you want to test through Settings > General > Network settings > Manage wireless networks > Set up wireless network.
For interference troubleshooting, choose another Channel under the router's Advanced > Wireless > Wireless Settings.
Select SAVE.
Retest through the Xbox's Settings > General > Network settings > Test network connection.
If WPA3 causes a connection failure during Xbox mobile-app setup, select the WPA2-compatible option Security > WPA2-PSK[AES] under the TP-Link router's Wireless Settings.
Select SAVE.
Reconnect the Xbox through Manage wireless networks > Set up wireless network.
If your router uses MAC filtering, record the Xbox's Wireless MAC under Settings > General > Network settings > Advanced settings.
Add that address to the router's allowed-device list using the manufacturer's instructions.
Restart the router after changing its filter.
If the connection still fails, update the router's firmware using the manufacturer's procedure for its exact model and hardware revision. TP-Link owners can find their model's firmware and instructions in the TP-Link Download Center.
An Ethernet test can narrow the problem
Connect an Ethernet cable between a router LAN port and the console's rear Ethernet port. This gives you a wired connection to test.
Run Settings > General > Network settings > Test network connection on the Xbox.
With a working temporary connection, install any offered update through Xbox button > Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates > Console update available.
Disconnect Ethernet after installation, before testing WiFi again.
Leave a console reset until last
Test another wireless network at a friend or relative's home through Settings > General > Network settings > Manage wireless networks > Set up wireless network.
Run Settings > General > Network settings > Test network connection there. If it works, focus further troubleshooting on your home network.
When results point to your home connection, contact your ISP with the exact Xbox error, modem and router models, and the Ethernet and alternate-network test results.
If the earlier fixes and connection tests fail, open Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info > Reset console from the Xbox button menu. A reset belongs at the end of troubleshooting: retaining installed games and apps does not guarantee preservation of unsynchronized user data.
Select Reset and keep my games & apps to reset the operating system and settings while retaining those installations.
Complete the console's setup.
Reconnect through Settings > General > Network settings > Manage wireless networks > Set up wireless network.
If the test reports There’s a hardware problem, or the restarted Xbox detects no networks while other devices do, open Microsoft's device-repair link from the Xbox connection-error page.
Sign into your Microsoft account.
Select your console.
Follow the service-request prompts.
Keep your exact connection-test error handy when contacting support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Xbox Series X connect to WiFi but multiplayer still fails?
Multiplayer and party chat have separate connection requirements, including NAT. Run Settings > General > Network settings > Test multiplayer connection. Use the displayed NAT status to follow Xbox's NAT troubleshooter.
How do I connect my Xbox Series X to hotel or dorm WiFi?
For a network that requires administrator approval, record your console's IP address and Wireless MAC under Settings > General > Network settings > Advanced settings. Give those details to the network administrator to authorize the console.
Why won't my Xbox remember another WiFi network?
Current Xbox software supports up to 10 saved wireless networks. If all slots are used, open Settings > General > Network settings > Manage wireless networks > Manage my networks. Forget an unused entry. Reconnect to the desired network through Set up wireless network, then select Remember network.
Can I finish Xbox setup without the mobile app?
Yes. Select Skip during the app-based setup invitation. Complete the console's digital setup with your controller.
